| barking in crate - help My yorkie always barks when I put her in her crate...when we leave the house and at night. I have tried to get her to like her crate by placing a treat in it and letting her go in there herself...but as soon as i close the door behind her....BARKING!!! How can I make her enjoy her crate but also allow it to be a place where she can be confined? |

| well, if you put the treat in there, i would think that it almost encourages her that its OK to bark in her crate. Yorkies, IMO, are tougher to train. They take persistance and patience. I would just use a stern 'NO' each time they bark. and no matter what, don't let them out as they are barking. Be persistant and patient, and you can train your dog. Also, you might want to consider a play pen as opposed to a crate if you leave the house. Your dog may feel better not being couped up in a little crate.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | barking in the crate MUST be ignored. Any type of attention is good attention in their minds because they are getting you to come to them, even by yelling No at them they are still getting you to talk to them. ignore, ignore, ignore. i know its tough and their barking is annoying but if your persistant it works. Also, ONLY let your yorkie out when she is quiet. If you let her out when she is barking she only learned that barking opens the door. you can practice this at home when you aren't going out. Place her in her crate, close the door and walk into the next room. She will start barking. ignore her. As soon as she stops barking let her out. these practice sessions will let her know that when she is a quiet good girl she will be let out. Clicker training helps more because you can click when she is quiet and while you are still out of the room because usually as soon as you walk back in to let her out she will start barking again. its tough to time everything correctly.

| My older yorkie, Lily, was crate trained before we got her, so she's been used to it already We're pretty much starting fresh with our 5 mo old, Bree. At night, what really helps us is to put a blanket over the crate so the light doesn't keep them awake. Of course, at night it's dark anyway, but in the morning (esp early morning) this helps a LOT. Our 5 mo old whined, howled and barked a lot for the first week, but we don't respond to it that much other than a few 'SH's' here or there if any. After awhile, they realize they're not coming out and just stop doing it. Bree still will bark a little, but we just started this a couple weeks ago so we're getting there. We just started in the crates during the day while we're at work. It's really been helping for potty training since they don't like to mess in their crates. We don't put blankets on them during the day, but my husband does come home on his lunch to let them out. We don't like leaving them in there for too many hours at a time. We aren't here to hear Bree bark about being in there, so what we can't hear, doesn't bother us. Good luck!

| Paddington Bear barked for AN HOUR in his crate last night. He was so hyper when we got home from the pet store, and I played all sorts of games with him, and then he started to get too crazy, so I put him in his kennel... He stopped barking when I pretended to leave the house. Then I snuck upstairs. He was such a mess from barking for so long, but when he saw me he put his little booty on the floor (I make him sit before I open the door) I opened the door, and then made him sit and wait until I verbally released him from sit. It broke my heart how worked up he was from barking! He didn't bark at all today. I have him trained to sit and wait until I say okay, though, for everything-he even sits and waits to eat after I put his bowl down, so this was an easy exercise for me and him. you can't pay any attention to him until he is quiet. When he is quiet, then give him a treat or let him out. Gradually increase the time that he has to be quiet before he gets a treat or attention. He'll soon learn that you want him to be quiet, and that he'll get more attention from sitting nicely than from barking. -O
