Paddington Bear barked for AN HOUR in his crate last night. He was so hyper when we got home from the pet store, and I played all sorts of games with him, and then he started to get too crazy, so I put him in his kennel... He stopped barking when I pretended to leave the house. Then I snuck upstairs. He was such a mess from barking for so long, but when he saw me he put his little booty on the floor (I make him sit before I open the door) I opened the door, and then made him sit and wait until I verbally released him from sit. It broke my heart how worked up he was from barking! He didn't bark at all today. I have him trained to sit and wait until I say okay, though, for everything-he even sits and waits to eat after I put his bowl down, so this was an easy exercise for me and him.

you can't pay any attention to him until he is quiet. When he is quiet, then give him a treat or let him out. Gradually increase the time that he has to be quiet before he gets a treat or attention. He'll soon learn that you want him to be quiet, and that he'll get more attention from sitting nicely than from barking.
