| To Spay or Not to Spay??? Ok I have a 9 month old yorkie! We went to the vet today to see about getting her baby teeth pulled, and the vet wants to spay her as well while she has her under. I really do not want to because she has not fully matured yet. The vet said that if I spay her before her first cycle then I have 99% less of a chance to get breast cancer. But I feel that if you spay a dog before they fully mature then it might change the dog. Please give me some feed back on the issue and help me decided weather to spay or not to spay CoCo. Thanks all |

| I really believe in spaying and neutering. I don't think it changes them really, if so only in good ways

| Both my dogs are spayed. If you're not going to breed, then it is the best thing for them unless your vet advises otherwise. It's always hard to put them through the surgery, but trust me the hardest part is keeping them calm and still for the 10 days afterward!

Donating YT 11K Club Member | I think you should spay. It's much healthier and safer. How big is she?

| We've always spayed or neutered our wee ones as soon as it was safe. I've never seen any change in behavior. I've been reading that it's common to do the spay/neuter at the same time as getting rid of baby teeth. Saves them the trauma of going under more than once. Seems to be the best option. |

| I vote to go ahead an spay her. It is so much better to spay them before their first heat cycle - don't have to worry about the mess and keeping her away from other dogs, not false pregnancies (or real ones), and less chance of cancer later on. I have heard that neutering a male before fully maturing may affect their structure (mainly in large dogs)...I learned this from some show breeders on another great pet forum. But I have never heard anything about early spaying affecting a female's development. And if you aren't planning to show your dog (male or female) why does it matter? Your dog will be healthier in the long run if you spay her now. Plus, the younger they are the quicker and easier they recover from the surgery.

| I had my 2 girls spayed as soon as I could after their 1st heat. I had them both done at the same time. They were absolute angels. |

| The reason it is best to spay before their first heat is that their organs are still puppy sized at that time. It makes for a smaller incision, less invasion and faster healing time. As long as the vet is putting her under for her teeth it is best to have her spayed at that time so she doesn't have to be put under repeatedly. Spaying won't change her personality only save you from the moodiness and mess of her cycle.

| I could be mistaken, but my vet said it is also healthier for them to be spayed before their first heat if you don't plan on breeding as even one heat without a future pregnancy can increase the risk of cancer.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I just had Lulu done at 8 months of age and weighing in at 2.5 lbs. No change in her personality at all. She is a tiny and the vet wanted to wait until she was 7 months at least. He did say that gave her time to stop growing and he also wanted it done before her first heat. Good luck in deciding.

| She is 3.5 lbs and full grown, but just has not had her first heat cycle. We had a bad experience at the vet overnight when she was 12 weeks old, and that vet said that I could spay her because she would not make it getting put under, but this vet said differently and has to put her under for her teeth. I am really worried, and have been praying about it to find an answer. I hope I will make the right decision. I have still not decided, but am taking advice. |
