The reason it is best to spay before their first heat is that their organs are still puppy sized at that time. It makes for a smaller incision, less invasion and faster healing time. As long as the vet is putting her under for her teeth it is best to have her spayed at that time so she doesn't have to be put under repeatedly. Spaying won't change her personality only save you from the moodiness and mess of her cycle.
