| Quite often when a dog or any animal is sick or hurt they will keep to themselves, if they are crying or yelping you can be assured they are in pain. Best of luck with your new puppy.

I am sorry that I am proud to be the silly woman who does compare her dog to her child because i love them just the same. I know my dog like i know my son. The thing is my dog does do the squeel for every lil thing .. he give the same queel for someone stepping on him as when his hair gets stuck somewhere and he panic cause he is stuck.. one time when i was in my chair i put my foot on the ground to check to see if he was there and he squeeled to warn me he was there cause i know i didn't touch him. Everyones pets are different and respond differently.. that is why i thought we were posting to share our experiences and advice. Thanks for dumbing it down for me.. Now I know my son can tell me whats wrong, but my dog cant. now i know | |

| To the original poster - I think we beat ourselves up worst than anyone else does - enuf said. I just wanted to share that when I'd had Lucy home a week, she saw the cat and got excited and "LEPT" out of my arms, falling about 4 feet head first on the tile. The sound that came out of her was indescribable-it sounded what I can only describe as a lamb in pain and she went so rigid I knew she'd broken every bone in her body. Once I calmed down (I couldn't breathe) and calmed her down I of course rushed her to emergency. She was 100% okay but I learned a lesson. I've also learned the Yorkie Shuffle. I'm glad your baby is okay.

| Sometimes they squeal out of fear more then being actually hurt. You checked him over very well, to be sure he's okay...and he's acting normal now, right? So just remember to watch him very carefully, if the squealing is prolonged...doesn't stop...there is definitely something wrong, and it may be internal...which needs to be assessed by a vet. Better to err on the safe side. Hope your baby is A-OK..

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Squeeling yorkies I have 4 grown yorkies and just had my fourth litter. It is true you need to be careful but some puppies and older dogs not just yorkies are extra sensitive. I have a pop/chi mix that had PDA and open heart surgery he squeals if you look at him wrong literally....Heaven forbid you actually hurt him. In nine years there has never been anything wrong with him if he did go to the vet because we though he was hurt I have had three puppies that seem extra sensitive. Right now I have a male and female left at 12 weeks the female will tug on the males ears and that is fine BUT if he jumps on her she squeals like he killed her! Lucky they tend to grow out of that stage most of the time. I know the older two did - thank goodness.... I think it is generalizing to say they only squeal when hurt. Like kids yorkies are smart enough to do it for other reasons....... With Yorkies or any pets, kids, etc it is all a learning experience to know how to handle them.......

I love my girls just as much as my kids - but my comment was meant nicely... The person I replied to COMPARED her son to her dog. I wasn't being rude or as you said 'dumbing it down'. and yes - it is up to US to figure out the extent of pain because yes - a child CAN Tell us what hurts.

I was going to say the same thing. I knew a dog that use to scream out of fear. I am not saying that he is scared of you just that he could be scared of something. My grandmother had a dog that was like this. I would take him to the vet for a check over just to make sure everything is ok and then go from there.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | wow, i think there is some pouncing going on here.... To the OP, I agree with wemple2 and Jeri Cunningham. Some dogs are just more sensitive then others. I've stepped on Morgan's foot a couple of times and i've accidentally kicked her once or twice too because she got underfoot. Hell, my dad actually accidentally knocked her down 4 steps when she was 6 months old. She didn't make a peep and just got up and continued to follow him, except a little less closely. We've all learned to be more careful. When morgan was a baby i would shuffle around her. Now she's learned to move out of the way and not get in front of people while they're walking. So does stepping on my dog make me a irresponsible owner? i think not. Things happen. Dogs will usually cry out more in shock then in pain. however, excessive crying should be addressed, especially if its accompanied by trembling and panting, or something more serious.
