Default You guys are so lucky

Let me just say that I do not own a yorkie, but would really like too. I have been doing my homework and researching (and even went so far as to pupsit a yorkie for a week) . Now i am convinced that i want one, however price is deffinatly an issue; i never dreamed these little guys can be so expensive. Anyways, i lost my golden retriever on september 11th (yeah i know, what a memorable day to lose my baby on huh?) and i just wanted to let you guys know how lucky you are to have youre furbabies, because i would give anything to get that companionship back in my life again; maybe someday i can be as happy as you guys are, but in the meantime i have to be content to read your posts and envy you with all my heart. Cherish youre animals because you never know how long they will be around.

Welcome to YorkieTalk, Orin! Sorry you lost your lab ... we had a Golden Lab several years ago and he was an absolute sweetheart! Never in my life saw anything that large that wanted so badly to be a "lap dog"! We rescued him so we totally understood that he probably missed all that cuddling when he was a baby, so we would just hold him and cuddle him and he never tired of it! Have you considered a Yorkie Rescue? There are hundreds that are just "discarded" and wonderful rescue organizations out there who try to place them in good homes. We probably have members here who can tell you how to go about it. Good luck!!

A Yorkie can be real addicting if you get to play with them a whole week! Welcome to our little Yorkie community here, as bettyeanne says, there are Yorkie Rescue organizations, here's a few links:

Default thanks

thanks for the greeting... and yes fasteddie they ARE addicting, i was so pathetic, i cried when i had to give her back ... unfortunatly i have tried to adopt several yorkies in the past few weeks, and they denied me simply because i did not own a home I understand the need to adopt unwanted animals and i was ready and willing to do that, but they made it absolutly impossible (they basically said MAYBE you can adopt one when you get a mortgage) needless to say i think this is quiet unfair since they have so many little ones in need of homes, they always say they need people to adopt but they have ridiculous guidelines that make it impossible!!!! anyway, enough of my ranting, so... due to no luck with the rescues and shelters i have decided to just save my money and go to a breeder.. does that make me a bad person? because i honestly TRIED to adopt

I cannot believe YTNR wouldn't let you adopt just because you didn't have a house! The only reason I can think of is maybe the barking might irritate other tennants, or maybe you don't have an enclosed area for the dog to pee?

You might be better off starting fresh with a puppy. This way, you can train it to use pee pads from the start, and train it not to bark. I think many of the Yorkies from YTNR are older, and it's harder to get an older dog to adapt to your lifestyle. Maybe that's why they didn't want you to adopt. Well, we all know your heart is in the right place!!

I know this sounds terrible, but what if you stretched the truth and said you lived with your parents in their house.....? Do your parents live nearby?

Hi..it is wonderful to have a yorkie, never in my life i had such incredible friend like my Mojo I am sorry to hear that they didn't let you adopt because you didnt have a home...that is kind of stupid if you ask me, my dogs never leave the house so i don;t see what difference it makes. Well, did you try the local animal control? They also have a "waiting" list that you can leave your info and what kind of dog you want so they can contact you...also try to seach on petfinder and good luck!!

Orin,
Always watch the paper (classified ads) I also did a search for breeders in my area and a lot of times you can get a "pet quality" yorkie maybe without papers for much less. Papers mean nothing to me, I will not be breeding my babies anyway. They are the bright spot for me everyday when I get home my husband says they wait for me by the door and jump into my arms. They are worth every penny!! Good luck and keep looking, you won't be sorry

thanks for all teh replies. Yes it does stink that i can't adopt (kinda defeats the purpose of adoption centers huh?) so my boyfriend and i are saving our pennies to buy a pet quality yorkie (without papers), but i am going to wait until the summer to find and get it because i will be able to spend almost all day with the pup .... again, thanks for all the feedback and the help.... (as an afterthought to junebug's comment....lol....... i actually considered lieing, but decided that if they didnt want to adopt out a yorkie to an obviously loving home then they werent worth my time in dealing with them *the people, not the dogs* i actually feel bad that i cant adopt but there are plenty of yorkies out there and i will wait until the right one finds me).. and no it is not so awful a thought to lie to the organization, my mom and dad told me to do the same thing

Orin,
welcome to YorkieTalk.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your Goldie. Our neighbors had one for 8 yrs and she died from Cancer. I think thats pretty young to go. Anyways she was the most gentlest dog towards our two little 5 lb. baby yorkies, they miss her as much as we do. Everytime they see a Goldie, they think its her and want to go right up close. We feel so bad. We see her grave from our house every day.

On the other note, my daughter wanted to adopt an Italian Greyhound and was turned down because she didn't have a fence around her own home property, so she went and found an IG at a pet store. I know its promoting Puppy Mill sales, but she really wanted an IG and found the most beautiful one, almost looks like a fawn. She keeps reminding me of the no maintenance for him and how wonderful disposition he has around all people and other dogs. Mojo stays in the house most of the time, he's only 10 lbs. attends Italian Greyhound Playdates and gets plenty of exercise inside. He does go out on a lease but uses the puppy pads during the day when my daughter and her husband are working.

Mojo is a year old now and the most happiest, friendliest pet. She feels bad she had to go to a pet store, and had the same question as you " Does that make me a bad person to buy from a pet store?".. Well, some of these rescue places should change their policys, I think its too bad that you have to buy a home, or have a stockade fence around your home to adopt a pet. That just doesn't make sense, there are a lot of responsible people out there that can give a lot of love to having an adopted pet, I think its discriminating and really hurting these animals that deserve to be adopted and loved.

Good luck, Orin , whatever you decide to do and Welcome Aboard here.

thank you yorkei24u i totally agree... i actually just finished writing a letter to the head of the rescue organization about their ridiculous policies and commented on their lack of success placing animals due to the fact that they find everyone who wants one 'unfit'.. we shall see if i get a response back, i dont think i will, they dont seem to care (which sounds pretty bad since these are the people that are supposed to care). I'll keep you posted on if i get a response or not.

Great idea, if they get enough letters they might change their policies.

Its like human babies, so many couples want to adopt within the US, yet parents have to pay "Big Bucks" to adopt babies from other countries. I don't know why this has to happen to humans or animals. Love is everywhere and if people go out of their way to adopt then these rescue places ought to look at their policies and make changes.

Its just not fair !

It's a shame that it's so hard to adopt when you are really suited. Although I can see where the rescue organizations concerns lie, they don't want the puppy (dog) being returned because of barking(apartment), running loose (no fence) or worse yet, being run over by a car. I would be nice if they could come over to the perspective adopters and see the area and then make a decesion and maybe bend the rules.

Orinskye, when you go to buy a puppy, even though papers aren't important to you, make sure that you are getting a purebreed Yorkie. There are many breeders out there who don't get quality yorkies to breed and then you have problems later down the line. I have seen many people who want one after they see my boys and then they didn't do their "homework" and bought the first one they went to look at because the price was right. One of them ended up buying a puppy that I really don't think was a yorkie. Just be sure that it is a purebreed, if that's what you want, and look at a lot of pictures of the different stages of age so you know what they are supposed to look like. Don't mean to sound like a "nasty" person, I just want you to get what you are looking for. Good luck and I'm sure you will find the right puppy for yourself...Theresa & The Boys

lol....... you didnt sound nasty at all... acutally that is the exact reason i am on this forum, to do my homework and get to know the yorkies REALLY well. If i get one from a breeder in the paper i will take my friend with me (he breeds yorkies), but that is only a last resort. if i can just manage to be patient my friend will get another litter of yorkies and i could proabably take one of them (the reason i was trying to avoid getting a yorkie from my friend is because they are small ones and i wanted a slightly larger one, about 7 lbs). I totally agree with you on doing homework before you commit, i went so far as to pupsit his 16week old for a week to see if it was the right breed i was looking for. and guess what?!! IT IS THE RIGHT BREED!!! so now patience is key i guess, i'll just have to wait it out and see what happens. Thanks for the advice though, this is a really great place to get questions answered (and you guys speak your mind wich is wonderfull too )

That is so good that you have someone to go with you when you find a puppy you are interested in. I'm with you on the size, my boys both are around the #7 and I like that size because they aren't quite so tiny. Good luck and be patient!...Theresa & The Boys
