| Ready to bring home our new Yorkie puppy Hello Everyone! We picked out our new puppy and will be bringing it home in 3 days. On the day we pick up the puppy we have an appointment with the vet to check him out. He will be 12 weeks old at 3lbs when we bring him home. We also puppy proofed our house by buying a baby fence so that he will only be roaming around in our very small kitchen area. Picked up all of the items we deemed would be harmful for the puppy. Also, we will be crate training the puppy and using a pee pad for going number 1 & 2. We have treats, toys, a nice soft bed, and bought Royal Canin puppy food for him. Also, we have nutri-cal on hand if any emergency was to arise. I think we are ready. We have read and researched extensively on the Yorkie breed. Even bought the book "Cesar's Way" that talks about the dog psychology. We are ready to devote our time in training and loving the puppy. So I have a question about something that I read in "Cesar's Way". It states we have to provide three things to our dog: Exercise, Disipline, and affection - all in that order. Does this apply to Yorkies? I understand the discipline and affection part, but how much exercise to does a yorkie need? and since this is such a small breed dog, from what i read, they are prone to hypoglycemia. Do they need to be walked everyday? 15minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour? How long? We are willing to devote as much time to exercise as possible, but don't want to over due it. Do we even need to walk the puppy at all? I am a firm believer in walking with a dog, since it helps bond us together. I had a 13 inch beagle and we would take long walk together. thanks in advance! | Welcome to YT and Congratulations Hello... It seems to me that most yorkie puppies do get a lot of exercise "on their own," since they are such active little babes. I feel like they still need more outside time and definately some "walks." Emmy, my 1 year old yorkie, gets walked (with harness and leash) several times a day, but for only short amounts of time. Actually I let her call the shots--when she is ready to go inside, she goes to the door and sits. I know she has had enough and is tired. Now little Oscar is a different story--we are trying to outside potty train him, but all he wants to do outside is roll in the grass. He will take off and run a bit, but mainly just lays down and rolls! We do a lot of playing with both--I guess you could call that exercise time, too. Yorkies love one-on-one time! My two also chase each other around in the house ALL DAY LONG! It sounds like you have made lots of preparation for your new baby--my Oscar was 3 pounds and 12 weeks old when we got him a few weeks ago! I can't wait to see pictures and hear of your adventures! Good luck and congratulations!

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! I can't wait to see photos. I don't walk Gizmo right now because we are waiting on the rest of his shots and other health issues, but I plan to walk him when he gets a little bigger. We have some big dogs in our neighborhood though, so I will be very selective about our route. I didn't see a harness on your list, but maybe I missed it. Please remember that their little necks/tracheas are delicate, so don't use a collar to attach the leash to. Enjoy your new puppy.

| Hi and welcome to YT! It sounds like you are well prepared for your new baby. This site is a great source for information, you will love it. Yorkie puppies are very active and do get quite a bit of exercise on their own. That is sure the case for my little girl Roxie. She is 4 1/2 months old and gets plenty of exercise from chasing her ball, rope, toys, etc. She also LOVES to go on walks and playing outside. I live in south Florida so I try to keep outside activity to the early evening when it is not so hot and humid. She lets me know when she is tired and I am sure your puppy will do the same. Congrats and good luck with your new little one |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Welcome to YT and congrats on your upcoming yorkie baby! Regarding exercise, i would wait till your puppy has all its distemper vaccines before taking him for walks. Then after that only go for short walks. When i first started walking morgan (i got her in July) she could only make it halfway around the block and i carried her the rest of the way. her little legs got tired and it was mid summer so it was hot. after a few walks in the heat i gave up on them until it cooled down a little. By mid-September she was able to make it all the way around the block (she was 5 months then). So use your pup as a guide for walks.

| Welcome To YT. It seems like you're ready to 'bring baby home' As far as exercising goes, yorkies usually adapt to your normal family activity (that's what I was told). I only walk mine 3 days a week and he gets enough exercise running up and down the stairs everyday. |

| Welcome to YT! It's so nice to see new people come on that have done their research before they get their puppy. Like people have advised, get all those vaccinations before their little paws hit that unknown outside territory. Don't worry, he will get plenty of exercise playing.

| Well I don't agree completely with Cesar's way... But walks are a very good thing for a yorkie puppy (once he's had all his shots). Your yorkie will let you know when he's tired, and when he does, just pick him up and walk home. Congrats! I can't wait to get to know you and your little one!

| Thanks for all the info and here are here pictures We finally took pictures of Tumi. I think she is the cutest thing! She's 15 weeks old at 2.6lbs. As you can see my fiancee loves to dress her up. thanks, -Tumi's Dad p.s. My fiance and I went hiking this past weekend for about 3 hours and Tumi walked with us for about 1.5 hours of it. I would say she loves to walk with us, even though the rest of the day she was pooped out. |
