I understand what Bile acid test is, I am posting this for 2 reasons... 1, I think those that do not understand or that have a new yorkie hopefully will learn about MVD and Liver shunt. And what to expect and how the test works. I do have a few questions myself. And dont worry about "hijacking" the thread...I want this to be a thread that we can refer back to for our questions, and answers. Ill start with my questions

Diggy had bile acid test at 11 weeks old. I was told to fast him only 6-8 hours ended up being 7 hours. I think he fasted a shorter amount of time due to hypo and colapsing from low blood sugar. He was 1.1 pounds.
His results were 5 pre and 7 post Good numbers I think. When I read on here of others results thier first number is always lower than Diggys, like 1 and 2's what would cause his first # to be a 5? Should that concern me at all?
DOes the fact he fasted for a shrter period than most cause it?

I am by no means equipped to answer your question, but since we recently got a high result I have been doing a lot of research.

My only thought is there must be some sort of food in their system with the first test because it's the eating that causes that second number to go up. Mine had a 6.9 pre number which I was told was normal but it's still higher than I have seen others post.

I think YorkieLuv is one expert - maybe she'll shed some more light.

Good post though - I think there have been a few recent diagnosis of liver issues here.

I want to be apart of this thread too!

After Roxy is through with her anitbs and her staph infection clears up, I am off to the Vet to have both Roxy and TJ tested. They never showed any signs, but my groomer has a girl from a later liter from Roxy's both Parents, TJ has the same father too. Anyway, I don't know what the outcome is now, but this little girl had blood work done before her spay and the results were not good, the Vet said the results showed that her liver is that of an old, old dog (she was about 10 months at the time).

So, just as a precaution, I am having them both tested.

After reading all the posts about a diagnosis of liver shunt, I want to have Conner tested when he goes to the vet the next time. Knowing what the numbers should be will be helpful.

being Bella is only half yorkie (other half is pom), should I be worried about this?

Yes, you should have this dog tested anyway, in my opinion. Dogs other than yorkies get liver shunts and mvd...I know of maltese, bichons, even boxers and collies who have had this problem, so I would say yes, get her tested anyway.

Yorkieluv....Do you know what range is normal for the first #....I understand the second, but most results I see people have 1's and 2's as the pre # Diggys was 5 but second only a 7....why the 5. All the vet could tell me was its normal....what constitutes normal??

Make sure yo tell the vet you want this test, you want the pre and post blod draw, they will tell you to fast him and stuff. Just thought you should know before hand due to the fasting aspect. IM not sure about the first # and where it should be, I did asl Yorkieluv as I am certain she knows she is VERY knowledgeable about shunts and MVD.

As far as post numbers go. I think its up to 25 is normal 25 to 100 is possible MVD and 100+ usually indicates shunt. Hope that helps!

Bile is needed for digestion, so when you eat food...bile is released into the intestines and then the bile acids are absorbed by by the intestine into the portal blood and returned to the liver. Bile acids are removed from the portal blood by liver cells. If the liver cells aren't working properly, bile acids are not removed and enter the body's blood supply. This is what the bile acid test measures...

Bile acids help break down fat. Because these acids are produced in the liver, a bile acid test evaluates both the liver itself and the blood flow to it. Typically, bile acid tests are run pre-prandially (before eating), and post-prandially (two hours after eating).
