| Serious digestive disorders in Yorkies Hello All, Some of you may remember me but it's ok if you don't. My name is Sue and I am Dixie Cup's and Buddy Boy's guardian. Buddy is my semi-rescue that I discussed at length when I was sure that I could not adopt him and I put his name and bio on this site looking for a good home. I fell in love and literally took from his last placement when the creep was in Florida. Since I was Buddy's dog walker on occasion I knew how to get into the creep's house. He never argued, complained or cared when he returned from Fla. and Buddy has been mine since March 1st. Buddy has been very, very sick and has been hospitalized twice already. Since digestion problems intersect with each other, Buddy was diagnosed with either IBD or severe gastroenteritis. He hasn't gone a week without vomiting or diarrhea and usually there is blood in one or the other. I have gotten several opinions and they all concur within reason. What a stressful mess this is right now. He is on reglan, flagyl, and pepcid and is eating only prescription food. Everytime, I, the human decide to make him healthier (as in adding a teasp. of organic yogurt or a vitamin) I wind up making him vomit again. Today my vet laid down the law. I am to keep Buddy ONLY AND STRICTLY ON THE PRESCRIPTION FOOD until such times as his digestive system calms down with consistency. This poor little boy really is having a rough time of it. Have any of you experienced this horrible situation with your little ones? My heart is breaking for him but tonite when I put him to bed, he was feeling good so I feel better too. But the sudden onset of his symptoms is always in the back of my mind and I never know what I will find in the morning. Please share if anyone one of you has not only experienced this with your dog but has also had some positive results. I know that Buddy's diagnosis is not a death sentence esp. since he is under treatment but still it is nasty, nasty stuff to deal with and sometimes very painful for him. I hope to hear from anyone who understands how difficult this is for both Buddy and me. Thanks a lot. YorkieSue |

| I am so sorry Buddy is having these problems and I do know how hard it is to see them in pain and seeing them vomit or have diarrhea. My Maddie is now 2 1/2 years old and at about 10 months old, she had the same symptoms as your Buddy has. It went on for months. Every time she would finish her meds, as soon as she was off them, her problems would flare up. My vet had me give her flagyl again, only not to stop them abruptly, but to very slowly wean her off of them. He had me cut down to every other day, then every 3rd day, and on. That worked and she had no problems for about a month or two...I can't remember exactly. My vet told me she'd have to be on the med for the rest of her life. I didn't like that idea because I did some research and found that long term use could be hard on the liver. So, what I do....when she has a flare up, I just start giving her the flagyl and pepcid. She seems to be worse in the summer and I think that may be because she eats things out in the yard. She got switched on the prescription diet...when she'd have flare ups, we'd try a different one. The last one she had, W/D...she absolutely hated, so I no longer have her on that. Maddie was diagnosed with IBD. I hope you can get Buddy straightened out. My only suggestion is stick to only prescription diet until he's gone quite some time without problems, and, weaning them slowly off the meds seemed to have helped Maddie. Good luck and best wishes! Maddie is doing better. She had mushy poop a couple weeks ago, so I gave her flagyl for a week...then started weaning her off. I noticed today it was mush poop again, so I have to try to figure out what's causing that. Until I do, she gets a lot of butt washings!

| Oh no! I haven't had experience with anything like that, but I wish you and Buddy the best of luck. You both will be in my prayers. You sound like an angel for rescuing him.

| bumping this up for you... Did your vet tell you if you can give a bland diet of boiled chicken and plain white rice? That might be okay for an upset tummy, but do some research on it first. As far as the vitamins go, I can tell you from experience that if I take vitamins on an empty stomach, they make me nauseous and sick. I HAVE to take them after a full meal, not just a glass of milk or a bit of yogurt. Maybe that's why he's vomitting after you give him his vitamins. And the yogurt, make sure it's plain and non-fat organic. maybe that would be better on his tummy. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this. It must be so hard to see your baby have blood in his stool all the time and diarrhea and vomitting. I hate when i see blood in Miko's stool. Sometimes, that happens to him as well..

| Sadie also has the same symptoms. The specialist put her on a strict precription diet only. She is on the W/D, which she LOVES so this is not a problem for us. It has seemed to have helped. W/D is a high fiber food, which has helped her intestines. Hope all goes well with your baby.
