I am so sorry Buddy is having these problems and I do know how hard it is to see them in pain and seeing them vomit or have diarrhea. My Maddie is now 2 1/2 years old and at about 10 months old, she had the same symptoms as your Buddy has. It went on for months. Every time she would finish her meds, as soon as she was off them, her problems would flare up. My vet had me give her flagyl again, only not to stop them abruptly, but to very slowly wean her off of them. He had me cut down to every other day, then every 3rd day, and on. That worked and she had no problems for about a month or two...I can't remember exactly. My vet told me she'd have to be on the med for the rest of her life. I didn't like that idea because I did some research and found that long term use could be hard on the liver. So, what I do....when she has a flare up, I just start giving her the flagyl and pepcid. She seems to be worse in the summer and I think that may be because she eats things out in the yard. She got switched on the prescription diet...when she'd have flare ups, we'd try a different one. The last one she had, W/D...she absolutely hated, so I no longer have her on that. Maddie was diagnosed with IBD.
I hope you can get Buddy straightened out. My only suggestion is stick to only prescription diet until he's gone quite some time without problems, and, weaning them slowly off the meds seemed to have helped Maddie. Good luck and best wishes! Maddie is doing better. She had mushy poop a couple weeks ago, so I gave her flagyl for a week...then started weaning her off. I noticed today it was mush poop again, so I have to try to figure out what's causing that. Until I do, she gets a lot of butt washings! |
