| House Breaking I am at my wits end with my Zena. She will be 2 years old in August and I have tried everything to get her house broken. We have tried crate training and it does work for overnight. She will not go in her crate. I have tried keeping a leash on her that I attach to my wrist so that I do not miss her signal to go out. I have tried taking her out every hour. I really want to be able to allow her the run of the house and am getting very discouraged. Does anyone have any ideas? She does realize that going in the house is a bad thing but does it anyway. She does it when I am distracted. |

| I know that with Lexi..she really needed to know that peeing inside is bad! So I would make sure that when i caught her peeing, I would very firmly say NO! or Clap really loudly. (I read that you need to interupt them, then bring them to where they should go). And obvisouly taking her out often enough that she wouldnt' pee indoors. TONS of praise when she did pee and poop outdoors. In no time she was peeing outdoors only. She will randomly have accidents, but thats usually when she may be under the weather. I am now working with my new pup Nico...and yes its tough, but he is doing great with going outside, and when indoors, if I cannot watch him, he goes in his ex-pen with Lexi and i have pee pads set up, and he uses those very well. I hope this helps!!

| I understand your frustration. I had my girls completely broken until we got Max. Then they started going where ever he went. We pulled up the carpet & tiled the whole house. Now they only go on in the potty tents on their pads. As for training outside, maybe the bells on the door might help.

| House Breaking We have tried the bells on the door and she ignores them. I am also very stern with her if, and thats a big if, I catch her in the act. This is my first Yorkie and I think I am still getting used to how strong there personalities are. She is a true terrier |

| It took like a year for Daisy. She would even poop in her crate. But when she learned it, she learned it really good. She is almost 4 now and I still praise her big time for going potty and poo-poo outside. She will hold both potty and poop for as long as it takes to go outside. She knows for a poo-poo outside she will get a chicken jerkey....and she will do anything for a chicken jerkey. LOL

It's not easy and does require ALL of your attention! I agree too, to give her a high quality treat for going outside. (something really really good). If you know anything about the clicker, I think using one would be good. Once you go thru the exercises to establish for your dog what a clicker is for then you can begin to train her with the clicker about what it is you want her to do outside. Take her outside, as soon as she squats, click and treat. after awhile you will click after she completes the act and treat. Believe me, with a few clicks and high quality treats, she will soon associate going outside to peeing and pooing and good things too.

| I've had a lot of success on the bells but it takes patience training them how to use this. It has saved Zoe from many accidents. |

| I was told that yorkies are one of the breed that are hardest to potty train. I think not. It takes a lot of time and patience. I am glad to say that Buttercup was fully potty trained at 5-6 months and my sister asked me to help hers with the potty training. No matter what I did, it didn't work. She (sister) then turned to the door bells and have had a lot of success with the bells. Although, the bell takes time for the dog to get used to. |

| House Breaking Thank all of you for your sugesstions. We will go back to being tied to me and in the crate when I am busy. We reach a point where she has not gone in the house for a few days and I let her have some freedom and she is OK for a day or two and then she starts going in the house again. I have stood outside with her for 10 minutes and she goes but then when we come back in maybe 30 minutes to a hour later she will go again in the house sonow I take her out twice. This has been going on for over a year. I have stood outside in snow, sleet, freezing rain etc and she is worth every minute of it but I want a dog I can allow the freedom of my home. |

YT 500 Club Member | of course we wanna see dont get discouraged about potty training it takes a while. i have had Armani for a little over a month. The strangest thing happened he constantly had accidents especially when I let him out of the x pen. Then one day my dad felt bad for him and didn put him in the pen. Armani had the kitchen, living room and front entry area all to himself. We came home after 8 hours!!! And there were no accidents he peed and poop on the pads Since then (for the last 2 weeks) we have been letting him have free roam and he has not had any accidents I dont wanna jinx myself but im a proud mama

| Its good your regressing back to leash and crate...I'd reccommend staying with those methods longer than you have been, so that it has the chance to really click with her.

| Good Luck Emmy is 1 year and 3 month old and is still not reliable with the potty training. I take full credit for the problems, but that does not help. Hope you have good luck--continue with the treats--that is where I have seen the most success.

| House Guests I almost lost my girl this weekend. I had house guests which were advised on arrival not to leave anything in her reach and to keep the door to the guest room closed. Medication, 4 pillss, were left on the bed with the door open and of course my girl found it. We rushed her to the vet's and she spent the weekend on an IV to flush the med's out of her system. She is home now and the vet feels there will be no problems in the future. The concern was kidney failure. Please, please please make sure that your guests understand that anything left within reach of a Yorkie will be found. I would not want anyone else to go thru what I just went thru. Needless to say the house guests will not be welcome back. |
