How do you guys keep such beautiful long coats on your yorkies. Paddy had longer hair for awhile and I would brush him every day. But now that he's spending more time on walks and at dog parks with the nice weather his coat was becoming harder to manage. He also seemed to be getting too hot and panting more on walks so we decided to get him a summer hair cut.

I would love to grow his hair out next fall/winter so any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi, Don't know if you'd like this or not, but both my Yorkies have cottony coats so I never let them get too long. Instead, I keep them in what I believe is called a Daisy Clip. The hair across the back and sides is clipped almost to the skin, but their "feathers" remain. Some groomers refer to it as a Schnauzer clip. We live in a rural area, so I couldn't possibly keep their hair long (they pick up enough debris as it is even with their short cuts). When we take them for a walk, a day never passes when someone doesn't remark about how cute they are and how nicely they are groomed. So I guess I'm doing something right.

My Otis has is black and has a cotton coat. He spends a lot of time outdoors with me on the weekend. I also keep his hair short. I think it's more comfortable for him, and, he HATES to be brushed/groomed, so it's easier for ME, too! I know some of the folks here have cotton coated babies and still keep a full coat. I'm envious of them, their babies are beautiful. I think there are various products you can learn about here for full coats for cottons.

I think it depends if your yorkie has a silky coat or cotton coat. Mine has a silky coat and it isn't any trouble at all. It's long. We try to brush it every day and use a metal comb once a week which keeps it pretty. Mostly, if she shakes herself her hair just goes back in place almost perfectly. A cotton coat usually means it is much thicker and I wouldn't even try to keep them in a long coat in the summer because they will surely get way too hot if they are outside very much.

I am pretty sure his coat is silky. When it was medium length he would shake and it would fall into the part as well. I guess I will try again when it starts to grow. I think it will be easier after moving. When my life settles down a bit I'll be able to stay on top of his brushing better than I was the few weeks before I got him clipped. Though I do like how cute he looks with his hair really short too. So I'll probably go back and forth.

I also need to learn how to do a proper top not when it gets long enough. I tried with the medium length hair and it would turn out somewhat but then it would get tangled.

Congrats to all those who own Yorkies with a silky coat. That's what I wanted, but that's not what I got. I also wanted a really small Yorkie. Smaller than Puddin who is about 8 pounds. I got one that will probably max out to 15 - Muffin. I wouldn't trade her for the world (she is such a sweetheart), but the breeder, who I believed was reputable, was not truthful with me and I believe, just wanted to pass her along to whoever would pay $1000 for her. That would be me - the patsy. Sorry, I didn't start out to whine. I dearly love both my babies, but when I was a young woman raising Irish Setters I sure never sold them for $1000 each, and I NEVER promised they'd be anything more than pet quality. Anybody else out there with similiar experiences????

My Phoebe has cottony coats, I keep it long in the winter and short in the summer, but most of the time medium long , mine pick everything too

so she get brush every day, sometime several times a day, I guess that is the price I have to pay when I keep her coat long

How can you tell, besides the long hair shake method, weather or not your Yorkie has a silky or cotton coat? I've kept Ritzie's hair buzzed short since she was a puppy but now that she is older I was thinking about letting it grow out. I've never been able to tell if her hair fell to a part before becuase I've never let her grow that long. Thanks for any advice!
