Welcome to YT! All of the advice on this thread have been great!

I did want to add one more thing. Whenever you come home and he is jumping and acting out of control excited, you should ignore him until he calms down. I know this will be hard at first! This lets him know that you are the alpha dog and it is okay that you have to go out.

Someone once explained it to me like this: When we have skin kids we are in charge of them and we worry to death until they get home safe and sound. So when we alow our dogs to be the alpha dog, they think of us as "theirs". When we have to go out, they will worry to death until you get home, sometimes turning that worry into destructive behavior. When we get home and we rush over to tell the puppy that "everything is okay, that Mommy (or Daddy) is here now!" We reinforce to the puppy that it is not a good thing to be away, and somehow it is bad to be apart. When we act normal, when we get home, and give the puppy time to calm down, we let him know that being away is normal, it's what the alpha dog does! Do a search on being the "alpha dog" and you will find a lot of good advice. I think you are a wonderful Mommy, and will do a great job in raising your little furkid! It's hard when you have to work but it is possible. I'm out of the house from 7to 5. Bengi used to stay in the kitchen, with his bed, food and pad. Yorkie cannot be crated for more than 4 hours, 2 when they are puppies. He did good in there though he missed us, but kinda get used to (sleeps most of the time). It took about 2 months to housetrain him because we weren't there the whole day. It takes patience, but if you really want him, you'll pull it off. You will learn a lot in this forum, when you have questions just come and ask.

it is very hard and i feel for you. i am a stay at home mom and it is still hard. yorkies need alot of attention. they are so full of life and want to share that with you.

I was going to use a play pen when we got Peanut, but he was such a little jumper and still is. I tried to crate train him and he learned how to unlock it and then I tried to pen him in the kitchen with some baby pen he climbed it. What worked best for him was the bathroom with his crate and bed and some food and water. I use a clear plastic baby gate, no holes for climbing. He will be one years old next month and he still goes in the bathroom and waits in his bed for is treat then goes to sleep. The baby gate is great because he can look out and doesn't feel so lock up. Good luck with your baby it does get easier and these babies are so worth it!

These are all great ideas! Rocco is a little jumper as well. he flies when he tries to jump and has also learned to run up my parents stairs. Just talked to my mom, and my Dad (who've in LOVE with Rocco) said he will not allow me to give up. I wasn't planning on to , I was just nervous about everything. i think it's sweet that my dad is so anamored with Rocco.

I'll definately make a note not to get anything that he would be able to climb.

I've never tried this myself....but I've heard that some have bought a baby gate to put it on top of the ex-pen so their little climber/jumper will not get out. Just a thought!

Good luck, and the fact that you are worried about and trying to find solutions shows that you are ready for your puppy. And remember, he won't be a puppy forever. Eventually, and it seems you're definately willing to put the time into it, you'll have a good, well-trained companion.

Have you tried a Snuggle Puppy? They work great. Have a heartbeat that sounds and feels like mom.

you know I didn't even think about keeping him in the bathroom with the plastic baby gate Does Peanut do well in staying in the bathroom? It's prob easier to clean than the kitchen huh? Do you leave the light on in the bathroom when you leave, do you cover his crate so that he can go in there and sleep too(during the day)? Has peanut ever escaped from the bathroom? what kind of baby gate did you get because if that worked for you then maybe I'll get that for my bathroom.

Peanut does great in the bathroom and he has never escaped. I got the baby gate at Babies R Us, it is ajustable and clear plastic no holes for climbing. I put his bed and crate in there and he goes right in because he knows that he gets a biscuit. I work 9-2 and he has never had an accident while being in there. I don't put a light on because he is usually napping because he is up early in the morning. Good luck with your little Rocco, I'll try to get a picture of the gate for you.
