Help!! Keeping us up at night Hello everyone, I hope all you yorkie lovers can help me, as I have a very large problem with my Yorkie. He has taken upon himself to keep me and my family awake by barking at either 3.00 am, 5.00 a.m and 7.00 a.m in the morning. When I say barking, I mean it starts off as a whimpering then it gets louder and louder until someone gets up and tells him to stop it. I am at my wits end with this, as my family are listening for the whimpering and it's not getting any better as we are losing sleep. To add to all of this he has started scratching the door to where the living room is and there are claw marks on it now. What I don't understand is that our dog (which we all love to bits) is nearing his 13th birthday this year and I think it could be due to dementure as he has started barking at things which aren't there. We have spoken to the vet and he has given him tablets (at a cost of 40 pounds per session), but this does not seem to make him any better. Can anyone out there advise me as to what to do about this, as like I have said, me and my family cannot get a good nights sleep due to this. Here's hoping. Yorkie owner.

Have you tried keeping him in the room you sleep in? Maybe he just needs to be near you

| Does he need to go out potty? Some older dogs can't hold it as long as they did when they were younger. My boyz get me up to go outside to potty almost every night and they are only 1 and 2 years old!

Both other posts are excellent ideas. One of my australian shepherds will do that when he is left alone, and will bark and whine periodically throughout the night until he gets attention. It is strange that he has started this habit after living with you for so long. It must be frustrating, I hope you find the source of the problem and fix it soon, so you can get back to sleeping well. ...and welcome to yorkietalk

Seems like because of old age he's probably getting a little confused.. and maybe scared if he's barking at things that aren't there.. but most likely he probably just wants to be around you guys? Why not try moving his bed into your bedroom for a while and see if that helps? Oh and the scratches on the door, if you have any illuminated paper or maybe cardboard (i know it sounds ugly, but it's temporary until you can find something else), you should stick that to the place where he scratches so he won't leave anymore marks.. Good Luck!! Let us know if any suggestions worked!

Many thanks for your reply's everyone. Just to answer your ideas, we have thought of putting him in the bedroom with us but he is the sort of dog that always taps you for attention and will whine to have the door open every five minutes. As regards him wanting to go to the toilet, we have been down to him when he starts and let him out, and that does not make any difference. Just to make matters worse, he has now decided to wake us up three times a night now. Once again many thanks for your ideas. Yorkie owner (who's getting no sleep)
