Both other posts are excellent ideas. One of my australian shepherds will do that when he is left alone, and will bark and whine periodically throughout the night until he gets attention. It is strange that he has started this habit after living with you for so long. It must be frustrating, I hope you find the source of the problem and fix it soon, so you can get back to sleeping well.
