Many thanks for your reply's everyone.
Just to answer your ideas, we have thought of putting him in the bedroom with us but he is the sort of dog that always taps you for attention and will whine to have the door open every five minutes.
As regards him wanting to go to the toilet, we have been down to him when he starts and let him out, and that does not make any difference.
Just to make matters worse, he has now decided to wake us up three times a night now.
