| Yorkie Baby in heat! Humping arms??! I have a 10 month old unspayed female yorkie. She has been going through heat for about 3 weeks now. At first, she was bleeding all over the place, very moody, all her potty training out the door, and she would hump our arms. She stopped bleeding, but her nipples are very erect and she is a little swollen down there. She still hasn't stopped the humping... and well, we had some friends over, and it was kind of embarrassing. But I didn't want to yell at her or punish her because I know it's probably not her fault. Is it normal for female yorkies to hump? And how long does the heat last and how often will it happen? Thank you in advance. |

| Pheobe is 10 month old, she was spayed at 6 month, she hump our arms (my husband and I only) not very often though, and she mark too (only outside where other dogs has been) she also lift her leg when she pee nothing about their heat, you can call the vet and they can let you know, also if you are not planing to breed her, I recommend to spay her, is healthy that way too |

| Our Piper was spayed at 6 months, and she was a "humper" of human arms, all her short life. Normally it happened only after an exciting play period, and she seemed to favor only myself, and my daughter's boyfriend. She rarely tried to be that "intimate" with others! We would gently tell her "no" and dis-entangle ourselves from her frantic grip. It was pretty humorous, though.

| Sorry, I forgot to answer your questions, about her heat cycle. Bitches usually begin their first estrous cycle (heat) between the ages of 6 to 12 months. Larger breeds sometimes later, 12 to 24 months. Heat usually lasts an average of 21 days. For some dogs it can be a few days more or less. She will probably come into heat again in about six months, averaging two heat cycles a year. You can deal with the blood by using puppy panties and pads, so she doesn't make you/your house/ or herself messy. It goes without saying you don't want to allow access to her by any male dogs as it could result in an unwanted pregnancy. There are many health benefits to have your girl spayed soon. An unspayed female has a greater risk of developing mammary tumors, as well as uterine cancer. There is also a risk of serious uterine infections that can be fatal. Pregnancy itself can be dangerous for your pup as there can be numerous complications. And ideally you would not allow her to be bred until she is at least 18 to 24 months of age. A litter of tiny yorkies can be adorable. But, please eduacte yourself if you are planning to breed your dog. Whelping puppies is not an easy job. It requires a lot of knowledge and work to do it successfully, and hopefully without heartache. BTW, you can discourage your pup from the arm humping without yelling at her, or scaring her. Just be firm and tell her "no". Good luck!
