| missing organs Has anyone ever heard of a yorkie (any animal) being born with only one ovary and only one kidney. I didn't mention this sooner because I wanted to get all the info I could before discussing it. OK, here it goes. I paid $2,200.00 for Lexi, my intentions were to show her. My husband checked out several breeders before making a purchase, and we have Lexi's family tree. She has a champion bloodline, and is excellent quality.(I know this means nothing to most, but to show it's important) A couple months ago I decided not to show her instead I was either going to breed her once and keep all her pups, and then have her spayed, or I was going to just have her spayed, and then buy another pup. I went with spaying her and buying another pup. Yesterday she went in to be spayed and the vet called me around noon and said Lexi was doing fine, but there was something really odd. She said that she removed her left ovary and everything looked great, til she went to do the right ovary and there wasn't one. Another Dr. came in to double check and told her to check for the right kidney, that it is very rare but when one of the ovaries is missing then one of the kidney's usually are too, and sure enough she only has one kidney. I was very upset and my first thought was could this have anything to do with over breeding or being inbred. The other Dr. is a specialist(of what I have no freaking clue) and he said in 22 yrs he has seen 2 female cats like this and now Lexi. He said it was so odd to him that he did alot of research. He said it is possiable that it could happen when a female is inbred, but he doubts that is the case with Lexi. He thinks this was cause because she was a c-section preemie.(which my husband knew when he bought her) I'm still a little worried that maybe her mother was inbred. ( I never been to this breeders home my husband did all this without my knowing and he did meet her parents) I guess I'm posting this because I would like to know if anyone else has ever heard of this. Also I would like to say that Lexi is fine and playing almost as normal as before surgery, and I am so glad I decided to have her spayed. The Dr. did tell me that because they had to be sure her ovary was missing that they had to move a lot of organs and that he suspects she would have a little more pain that normal. She has pain pills that work great though....

| Lexi's Mommy, I'm sure everything will turn out OK with Lexi. Did the vet say there was any reason for alarm cause of the missing kidney? Will you have to be more watchful? I don't really know. As for the pain meds, after Bo's neutering, his vet sent home some anti-inflamatory pain meds, enough for several days, cause Bo also had a dew claw removed and teeth pulled. It especially seemed that late at night if Bo started to get kinda manic and restless, I'd give him a pain pill he was able to settle down and go to sleep. These little ones can't tell us they are hurting. But if the vet gave them to you, use your intuition, and go ahead and give her one if you feel she needs it. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

| She is fine with only one kidney, just like people dogs can live a full, happy life with only one. It is however nice to know that if your kidney goes bad you will have another to fall back on. I'm not to worried about her health, I know she is ok and I would do anything for her no matter the cost. I'm just really sad. She is one of my babies and I hate to hear something isn't right. I wanted to have a big family and after my second daughter was born I was told NO more babies. Well, I found a way to make up for that, I have Lexi and plan to get another when she is about a yr old . My youngest is 6 (started Kindergarten last fall) so my husband got me Lexi and she is one of my girls. She is taking this much better than I am. It is just so sad and I'm so parinoid about someone not breeding properly.

| I am sorry to hear about your baby but remember this...humans live without a kidney all the time. Here at Johns Hopkins Hosp, there was just a 3 way kidnet transplant and not one kidney came from a cadaver. That means that those humans are gonna spend the rest of their lives with only one kidney. I am not trying to second-guess your vet but the kidneys and ovaries are formed long before the time she was delivered by c-section. I would do some research and see at what age gestation those 2 organs form. Why? Because, any organ forming at the same time could have been affected due to the same condition that caused the lost organs. I had a foster baby who had cleft palate and lip. Also, had webbed fingers and toes. When he needed surgery to repair his mouth, the doc discovered his heart was on the right side. Those organs all formed at the same time. Also, don't be scared. Sounds like your baby is healthy and happy!!! |

| I'm sure she'll be fine, too. Just think of it this way. You made the right decision to have her spayed. You wouldn't have wanted her to have the extra strain of having a litter if she only had one kidney, right? It's better that she doesn't have pups.
