Brand new here..... Hi - I am going to be a Yorkie owner next week! I have always loved this breed, but have always had large dogs - German Shepard and Brittany Spaniel. The dog I am getting is a male, 15 months old, and I have lots of questions. Of course, I will read up on here, but have some specific concerns that I hope someone can help me with. From what I have read, Yorkies are very committed to their owners. The dog I am getting is purebred, with papers. His owners had a baby, and the dog just cannot tolerate the baby, so he is currently staying with the baby's grandmother till he comes to live with me. They have told me he is a bit timid. First, will this little sweetie bond with me? I am retired, so will have lots of time to spend with him. Also, his name is not to my liking...will he adjust to a new name? Thank you in advance for any help and advice you can offer!

Hi and Welcome. I have a little guy who is fairly new to our family. We got him in November and he was 6 months old. I had some worries too. He didn't actually have a name as yours does but I worried that it would be hard for him to learn his name since I have another yorkie. I also worried about the bonding issue. Even though theres several months in age we're talking about, I don't think you have to worry. Levi knows his name and he is my little baby now by all means. The bonding will come easily!! I am originally from southern MD. I moved to FL a couple years ago. My kids are there so they keep me updated on everything!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome!! I just got a 13 month old female Saturday and she was very timid at first. Now she is running around and playing with my other Yorkie. We decided to keep her name since it fit's her. I do find it is harder to potty train and older one as she was not trained when I got her but hopefully your's has been since he was with a family. Pixie was in a pen at the breeders use to just going anywhere on the paper. She has bonded very quickly with us. Good luck.

Thanks so much!!! I am much more at ease, now. I do believe he is potty trained, so I hope that won't be an issue, but I can stay home with him and take him out frequently. If he isn't coming with a harness, that will be my first purchase for him. I am just so excited and happy to be getting him...I hope he will love me - he will be spoiled for sure...smiles. I think that I will be meeting him on Saturday! Now I need to decide on his new name. Thanks again for all of your help and encouragement!!

Welcome! From my expreience I have found that Yorkies are quite adaptable. Given plenty of time and patience and "room" they adjust and adapt to new environments quite well. I recently became the proud mommy to one very shy little boy, Kiko. He was so very nervous.....I gave him the chance to "be a dog" to run with the other yorkies, to go to the barn and join in the "chase the barn kitty" game, to snack on and roll in poop of all shapes and sizes AND most of all I gave Kiko some time and space to figure out exactly who HE was. The little dude who was a shivering mass of nervousness when he came to live me on Thanksgiving Eve is now a very self confident young adult who has that typical Yorkie "live life tot he fullest" personality.

You are so great! :) I am so glad I found this forum! I will keep you updated on my new little fellow. I'll try to get some pictures of him to post. I'm encouraged by your stories of similar adoptions and how well your babies have adjusted. I think we'll be okay together, and think my nervousness might be partly because I cannot yet believe that I am so fortunate to be getting such a wonderful pet. I have to pinch myself to make sure it's really happening. I love him already, and we haven't even met yet! LOL Thanks again!!

I mentioned that I'm from the so MD area originally. Just wondering what part of MD you're from. Not trying to be nosy, just curious I guess. You never know who you can run across. I can't wait to hear more about your new baby.

Sharong, I am in Lusby/Solomon's Island area. Originally from Michigan, but have lived in a lot of different places. I love it here, although not much liking all the building going on....clear cutting so much forest and the poor animals losing their habitat. Guess I must accept the "progress" though, as I think I'm here to stay. Where did you live in MD??

I was born in Waldorf and lived all over the area around there. I ended up settling in LaPlata until we moved here. I'm familiar with Solomons. It sounds like Calvert Co. is building up too. Waldorf is crazy now. Yeah, it's such a shame when areas start growing. You're right, animals lose their habitats, house upon house is built, traffic gets crazy but that's progress as they say. My husband used to live in Prince Frederick when I met him. I guess that's growing by leaps and bounds too. We haven't been in that area for quite some time. I think we'd probably be surprised now! I guess you're not missing the Michigan weather or are you? I have a son who lives in Dowagiac.

Yep - I'll bet you'd really be surprised to see how much this area has grown. Ha! I don't miss the Michigan weather at all!! LOL In December, I called my dad, who lives in Traverse City. It was 70 degrees here, and he had 18" of snow. We talk about gardening, and he just can't get over that I am STILL harvesting stuff from my garden here. I'll start planting peas and such in a couple weeks, and he can't plant anything till the end of May. Big difference. I am lovin' it! hehe
