You will find however, when breeders really are caring and responsible, they treat ALL their babies with the same devotion and care...they dont divide the babies into groups of, "These babies are just going to be pets, so I can go cheepo on how this group is cared for, wont waste time or money on these", or "This group is my nice bunch, so I can spend a little more time and love and money on this group, because I am going to price them higher", or "This is my really great group of babies, and I am going to fnance my summer vacation on these because they are my potential show puppies or breeders....will give ONLY this group excellent care, love and attention, because these are going for top dollar"! REMEMBER! When you want to buy from a reputable breeder, that person is spending an enormous amount of time, love, care, money, etc on that ENTIRE litter of babies...do NOT expect to contact a reputable breeder, wanting "a perfect, healthy puppy, with all the bells and whistles", for an UNREALISTIC price, simply because you only want your baby for "just a pet". "Just pets" are every bit as important to a reputable breeder, as the next show dog they may produce. They deserve all the same amount of love and attention as the other littermates. If you are wanting a Yorkie that is only appreciated by the breeder, as "just a pet, not a show dog", dont be stunned and amazed if you can not find a reputable breeder, having "buy one get one free" sales, or babies going for $300.00, or "buy your pet quality dog here, going cheap, going fast"!! I have been contacted by MANY people that want a healthy AKC registered baby, house broken, crate trained, current on all vaccinations and worming, micro chipped, spayed or neutered, well puppy health checks every 4 weeks since birth, etc., etc., etc, but since they "only want a pet", they think the value of that dog TO ME should ONLY be about $300.00-$500.00. ANY "reputable breeder" has invested more than that in pre natal care alone, before that litter ever hit the ground! The problem may NOT be you can not find a reputable breeder....it MAY be you can not find what you expect in your puppy, for pennies on the dollar.
Yikes!
I posted this question 7 LONG years ago. When I posted I was looking for a pet. Never meant or implied that I thought that a pet vs breeding one made one dog better than another. I also was not looking to get a pet "cheapo". Just so you know I met a breeder on here who I purchased my yorkie "Muffin" from for over a grand which is not "cheapo". I have been enjoying my dog with my family for the past 7 years. Thank you very much....
P.S. Guessing you didn't look at the date of this post???

I'm not maligning or defaming anyone. Simply stating what *I* would do. I never said your dogs were trash, so I don't know why you are so defensive. I'm wondering though, why not continue to improve upon the breed by showing? Why just buy someone else's hard work? Why not improve your own expectations? These questions are pejorative and not directed at any one single person.

You are correct!!! AGAIN, did not look at the date! I have to try to remember these "old posts" come back for re-post...(???!)...in any event, I am thrilled for you and glad you found your baby! Did not mean to imply that YOU were looking for a cheapo dog....but did see the opportunity to "educate" others out there that are searching for "just a pet" so it should not cost hardly anything!

"Continue to improve upon the breed?" I believe I am doing exactly that. I believe my time is best spent in the area of research. I used to breed and show Arabian horses for years....I am familiar with showing, the good, the bad, the tricks, and the politics, and I am determined to spend my efforts and money in the area of genetics, genetic markers, geno-typing, and stem cell research for curing, correcting, identifying, and hopefully irradicating the devastating diseases and genetic defects that rob us of our precious babies. THIS effort, to my way of thinking, is going to actually have a more direct effect on "improving the breed". Showing? Been there, done that, and will now move on to fighting battles that are so important to all of us who have lost a beloved pet to some horrible disease/condition. Someone elses "hard work" is not just limited to showing a dog you have bred, by the way, based on many years of OTHER peoples hard work, to establish the very pedigrees that are the building blocks show people use to produce their next winner! And thank God for those who have gone before, refining and establishing those wonderful, established pedigrees....I personally have no desire to "re-invent the wheel". I am thrilled to own pedigrees from winning established lines, that throw beautiful babies that are healthy. I am prayful that one day, there will be a blood test that ANYONE can draw on any dog they own, that can identify a gene that is responsible for liver shunts, or heart disease, or collapsing tracheas, or any number of the other issues many on here have endured. I am prayful that one day, we can use stem cells and tagging to correct neurological diseases and paralysis from spinal
injuries/tumors/diseases. Yes, my breeding stock are already decendents from Old World established winning blood lines, pedigrees....as is every winning show dog being shown today....built on "someone elses hard work". My goal is NOT to invent my own "look" or "style" or "attitude".....(perhaps some people consider that a horrible, self centered, goaless, greedy attitude)..I love all the wonderful attributes in the foundation stock I have now, that pass on to my babies. MY goal is healthy dogs for everyone of us!

What kinds of research are you doing in the area of Leggs-Calves-Perthes disease? Can you give me some citations as I'd like to read up on the current research being done?

While LPD is indeed an issue to be dealt with, it is not life threatening and it is correctable with surgery. Google it and you will find all that is known to date about the cause (which is unknown), the genetic components, and the successful treatments. You dont need "citations"...just google it. You will also be able to see where you can make dontations to facilitate research in the disease, unless you already have a favorite research center/university you contribute any much appreciated funds. Thank you for your concern and support.

I guess that means you don't know a whole lot. Enough said. As for donations, I'll decide where my money will go, and who I will support, and right now, it goes toward my own dogs and their very expensive vet care. And for the record, LCPD is not "correctable" - the femur head must be cut off and the dog must form a false joint in order to restore function. That is not a correction in my book, it's a restorative measure. I'm a little disappointed that someone who is so boastful about their genetic knowledge can't even point to more than google.

Oh hey to the NO...you most certainly aren't going to cite your google knowledge on here re: LPD without having experienced it, lived it and/or paid for it.

My Miss Mini had this before 1 year of age, My Miss Mini had the surgery for this, my Miss Mini is not "cured" or corrected, rather I like to say it was surgically enhanced to allow her to have a more active life, but by no means was it corrected or cured. My baby can't sit on command but rather improvises, she has limitations, and YES i DID seek out a reknowned surgical orthopaedic and pay bucu dollars for her surgery where he completely and assured me that while it could not be made whole, it would be better....please don't offer your expertise where you surely don't have any, rather; your opinion would be more warranted under the circumstances....

That's right, it's a horrible, painful, debilitating, dying off of the bone for unknown reasons. Even the best surgeon can't guarantee a great result every time. The lack of compassion by some is just so troubling. Indeed, surgery for LCPD is to restore function -- to make a lame dog who suffers with pain walk again -- to maybe run if you're lucky. I dread the day my dog must undergo the surgery. Right now he is not clinical but his xray tells the truth of his future. That's why I can't have people like YorkieMom1 dictate where I should spend my money -- I have it sitting in an account for MY OWN DOG. But, I will always have a few dollars to spear for charitable causes like yorkie rescues who take care of babies like this when owners cant.

OOOPS! There you go, "guessing". Actually, I do not take bait from people that clearly have an axe to grind....you were just trying to challenge me to give you "all the current research that has been done on LPD", designed strictly to belittle and humiliate me. You waste YOUR time and google what you want to know. You could care less what is being done about this disease. I wont waste MY time with your pettiness....go get into a pissing contest with someone else...my refusal to "prove" or "boast" about what I do, what I know, or where I choose to spend my money, to just little ol' you, is not relevant to anything, and is certainly not an indication of what I know or do not know. You obviously fancy yourself an authority on breeders, show people, show dogs, vets, Yorkies, diseases, vocabulary, definitions, intelligence indicators in people, and people YOU deem good enough to allow expression of their opinions or suggestions, I am sure the list goes on and on.......proud of you......I never boasted about my knowledge of genetics....I said I was involved in research in that area. Before you attack what a person "says", be sure you have read and UNDERSTOOD what you have read and are correct with your accusation... Now, take your "book" and go impress someone. I could care less what you think of me.

It was YOU that suggested where I should spend MY money. I do care about what is being done with LCPD which is why I just emailed the researchers at Clemson University and offered up my dog's pedigree, blood samples, and radiographs for their work on LCPD.

I have no judgment of you, but you seem to really have a lot of anger toward me. Oh well, can't please all of the people all of the time.

Once again very important information completely lost in someones own ego stroking and hurt feelings over someone elses opinion and offering of first hand knowledge based on experience and not Google or a book. And I resent your language here, its Saturday I'm trying to relax. I take offense to your post.

Are you by any chance a breeder? If so could you pm me the name of your program? Just curious.

Default Great Breeder

I purchased my little Mia Zeta from Anne Wylie at yorkies@eastex.net.

She is a reputable breeder and will not sell to just anyone.
