| which airline? I am new to owning a yorkie. My other dog is a cocker spaniel about 28 lbs. I find myself being a little extra protective (ok...a LOT more protective ) over maggie because she is so tiny. One thing we thought about before getting a pup was how much we were traveling. we decided to wait until 2006 was at a close to get her..which is why she was a christmas puppy. we just had too much traveling to do last year with our wedding being out of state and all. so...with that being said, we will probably take a couple of trips this year to NY and TX to visit family and I just CANNOT leave maggie behind. I would be a nervous wreck leaving her with someone. we usually have one of my 2 best friends watch the doggies for us but I just can't leave maggie. I am not planning any trips until summer b/c my daughter is in school, but once the time comes to book the trips, I need to know which airline would let me carry her on. I know with all the heightened security and stuff it is probably a lot harder. I remember a few years back, I was on a plane with a lady who had her dog as a "carry on". but I haven't seen that in years (since 9/11) and don't know who allows it these days. anyone have any idea? I would never want to put her under the plane. so carry on would be the only option for me, I think. thanks, once again, for your help.

| Actually, I believe most airlines will let you carry her on, assuming she is small enough to fit under the seat in a soft-sided carrier. Delta and Airtran both charge $50 to take her on the plane. It's actually very easy: you just put her carrier on the belt (without her in it) for security to check, and you carry the dog through the security check-point with you. No more difficult than that.

| oh, wow. that sounds easy enough I usually travel either southwest or jetblue. but I am not opposed to changing airlines if it means I get to take my baby with me

| Be sure your carrier meets the airline restrictions for the airline you are traveling. They are different. Americans height restriction is the tightest at 9 inches. I believe Northwest is 10 inches and the others are 11 -12 inches. I'm hoping to fly to Texas with my baby soon, so I'm researching the carriers.. |

| Jetblue and Delta are one of the cheapest for dog fare.. so I usually fly with them!

| Delta is probably the best with flying with small dogs. I just got off a very long trip with Boo and he did very well. The only thing is that you have to plan your lay overs so you can take your dog for a relief break. Alot of airports have relief areas outside the main terminal. Also to my surprise, when we were waiting for our next flight other people were taking there dogs out of the carriers and sittng them on their laps, and no one said anything. So that gives them time out of the carrier while waiting. Also these days you might be flying 2 different airlines, so you need to make sure that the other airline accept and that there is room for them, most airlines only alow 2 pets in coach and 1 in first class. | Southwest is our favorite airline, but do not allow pets! We pretty much have no choice where we are now [Colorado's western slope] so we fly United. We had always paid $80 each way for Toto but in December they charged $85 each way. The other airlines available have way too many connections and the flights are unbelievably long. We try to only book the shortest flights.

| I have traveled numerous times on NW Airlines. The price seems to go up every year. It costs at this point, $160. round trip plus of course you have to have a print out from your vet saying the dog has had all it's shots etc. That costs me $65. each time and is only good for a month. I have never had any trouble. I never feed too much before a flight, but make sure their tummies are not empty. Carry a little container with water. My dogs that I have flown with have always done very well. I take them out of the bag between flights in the restroom on the leash and let them do their business on a pee pad if they have to. Some people look at you like you're crazy, but who cares? Now we little doggie owners!! |

| I think that Southwest is the only airline I know of that will not allow you to carry on a small animal. The rates vary by airline, I know that United, Northwest and American all charge at least $85 EACH WAY to carry-on and the pet usually also counts as your carry-on luggage also. Just keep in mind that most airlines demand that they be left in the carrier under your seat for the entire flight.....
