Why tiny's over teapots?

Large ,med ,small. They are all loving animals. I have always loved all sizes and all breeds. When we decided to get our two Yorkies we wanted around the 5 lb size and thats what they both turned out to be 5 lbs. Mickey is a little shorter but he is a few oz more then Minnie, but they are both 5 lbs. If they turned out bigger or smaller it wouldnt matter to me.

My little year-old guy is 3.5 pounds -- and we did have some health problems with him in the beginning. However, he has turned the corner now and, though he is tiny, he is sturdy. When you feel his little body, he is solid and well-formed, not birdlike as he was I first got him. He's a healthy, happy boy. I DO wish, however, that he had been bigger so that we could have avoided his early health problems related to him being very tiny (1.5 pounds when I brought him home) and a finicky eater. I still wish he was within the breed standard of 4 to 7 pounds -- but I'll take him any way I can get him!

while this thread was interesting - I know if I do get another ...health & spunkiness (again) will be my first concern.

I would love to have a very small yorkie but then again - I like my average sized girls - I don't have to stress out over every little thing - It's easy to stress out on these guys at any size cause they're actually all very small.

Your girls are adorable. I have a tiny fraile girl. I hope she gets some meat on her bones cause I like to play rough. She jumps up & down off everything w/no probs. She is strong but 3.5lbs at 14 months.I'm hoping she will hit 4lbs-fattens up. I love all dogs all sizes

Oh, not necessarily!!! LOL! I have a 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 pounder, it "ain't" so small. Hate to see what it would be if they were 12 pounds. Yikes.

JMO. I would have totally agreed with you 4 weeks ago. Tia is 9 months and 2.5 pounds. I allowed her to do everything her bigger sister did. I never babied her because of her size and she is as healthy as Bailey. But when she broke her leg and because of her size I had to travel to a specialist to get it repaired which cost a fortune, and then got dinged more because of her size to spay her, I think that people need to be aware that accidents of this nature are more common with the smaller guys and that, if it happens it could be more costly. That being said, if you still have a strong desire and the economic means for these little guys, absolutely get one. They need good homes too!

just to add yet ONE MORE comment a larger yorkie doesn't mean they're amazons - MY girls are different weights but they are the SAME length - when they stand side by side Chanel just has the bigger frame while Cheri is built more fragil - but people seem so 'Aware' of weights I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I guess I'm up to about $1.00 in this thread now ???

Breed standard says must not exceed 7 pounds .... so your 3.5 lb little guy is within the breed's weight standard.

I am not sure where the 4-7 pound thing came from. The YTCA site does say "many breeders prefer a general weight range of 4-7 four pounds." But that is not a restriction to the standard.

I think 3.5 lbs is a very nice size, especially for a male.

how come it cost you more to have her spayed? morgan's didn't cost anymore then a 50lb dog, actually it cost less because of her size.

I EXPECTED my chain to be yanked. LOL I love all dogs, sizes and breeds too. I used to have a St. Bernard named Heidi. But my personal preference for the house and for yorkies is five pounds or less.

I didn't take this as a "stir the pot" post..but, as you well know it will only take one person to pick out one word or misinterpret something and they will run with it..I like to know why people prefer one size over the other also...We have had many threads on here about "teacups" and "tinys" and their tragedys....this is a learning forum and if a question isn't asked how will we learn....Your post was just fine!

I totally agree with the "fashion accessories" statement! I have to say...I love the "puppy look". I have seen adult Yorkies (here) that have had puppy cuts and I think they still look like a puppy..

With that said I have to also admit that I love all my Yorkies BUT I am able to enjoy Tia in different ways, then with the others. For instance she loves to go in the car so because of her size I am able to take her with me a lot of places and bring her in the story in her carrier which really looks like just a bigger handbag. I would never be able to do that with my other three. Hell Noel weighs 16 pounds I'd need a wheel barrel for her. LOL. There are ups and downs of having a tiny as compared to the standards. And, I do know from several posts on here that it does seem like there is an issue with hyperclicimia with the little ones. The vet says that in most cases this risk is only till they are around a year but even so you really do have to for their rest of their lives take extra care in making sure they eat enough. And, you have to worry about the cold days for pottying. For this reason I keep Tia wee wee pad trained. There are pros and cons I guess for each standard and tiny. Elaine.

Thank you so much for your answer. I was only trying to "EDUCATE" myself
on the little ones. I found this site searching for "Larger Yorkies" because that is what Buddy turned out to be and everyone told me they never
saw a Yorkie so big! I was worried he was not a pruebreed. Recently all the
talk is over the tiny's. I just wanted to understand more about them, however, people on here go into a frenzy when they are mentioned it seems.
I am not touchy at all regarding Buddy's size. I thought this site was to learn from. How can you learn when people just jump to conclusions when they see the word tiny! Lesson learned. I'll go elsewhere regarding them.

I agree ...& this thread was interesting. Brenda you said it perfectly - this IS a learning site and if people were all afraid to speak up then how would anyone ever learn anything ?

I always feel bad when people get upset & accuse people of bashing tinies due to their size here....they don't. I've been here a long time and have yet to see a yorkie bashed over size ...but I DO see people sharing about the special needs of smaller yorkies. To me, that's helpful for people who really want one and maybe don't know how fragil a very small dog can be.

It's just common sense.
