New Baby Yorkie/Bad Breeder? I just got my new baby Yorkie on Thursday. Talked with quite a few breeders before deciding on this one. It esp. appealed to me as I could drive the few hours to pick her up and not ship her on a plane. She was supposedly 16 weeks (2 wks. ago) and weighing 1 lb. 9 oz. I waited two weeks to get her as to be done with the Christmas holidays and choas. She was then supposedly 18 wks. old. When I arrived to get her I was informed she had just started coughing that a.m. and was put on Clavimox. I took her to the vet the following morning for a rountine new puppy check up. The vet said she had Kennel Cough and to continue with the Clavimox. The vet also said that he wouldn't guess her age to be 18 wks. based on her teeth but more like 12 wks. old. Also, in that short two week span, she is now weighing 32 oz. Also, she has worms and I was given a wormer for her. Did I get ripped off? I am not a breeder, so I want to know if this is normal to have a sick pup like this? I purchased her (paid for) at 16 wks. so the breeder knew I would pick the pup up in two weeks. Yet it was still sick. The pup is APRI reg. with a birthdate showing her to be 18 weeks. Yet, the vet felt she was younger. So did the breeder scam me in order to make the puppy appear to be older with a lower weight? I am going to keep her, but for the money I paid, I was expecting a tiny, healthy puppy. That's what I thought you got when going to a breeder. Not so?

It's very posible that you were scammed. It happens. the paperwork only shows what the breeder submits. May I ask where you got her from? Are you near Omaha or farther west?

| Hi and welocme to YT! Hmmmmmmm, that seems really fishy. Your puppy should of been completely healthy and not have worms or a cough when you got her. Also, if your vet is correct about her age, then your breeder is dishonest and misled you.I would try and get a partial refund. I'm so sorry and I hope your little girl gets better soon!

| Did you pay more for her because she was supposed to be a tiny?

thanks for the fast replies I purchased her from Nancy Pack of Packs Pups in Wood River, NE. Yes, I paid $1,500 because she was supposed to be a tiny. I have a 3 lb. Jap. Chin, so I wanted her small. My house is set up for tiny dogs since my Chin can't jump up in the bed. He has stairs for the couch and bed. I thought by going to a breeder that I would get someone who knew what they were doing. I bought my chin 3 years ago (he was already 9 mos. by then and not housetrained) through the newspaper. He just needed to be neutered, which really helped with the lifting the leg everywhere. Now I am really getting angry about being scammed. I looked on those Yorkie wt. charts and if in fact this little girl is only 12 wks. and weighing 2 lbs. she is going to be 5 lbs. adult weight.

I would be very surprised that a vet can determine the age of a pup by looking only at the teeth .

Double the weight at 12 weeks puts her at 4 pounds. That is a nice healthy size, still considered to be very small. My two are 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 and it is hard to tell the difference. 5 pounds is a very nice weight for a yorkie. 3 pound dogs are very fragile. They break easily.

i agree about the teeth thing too, they could be slower growing, and the weight thing..chill..4-5lbs is still TINY dont be obessed with 2-3lbs range and no one can guarantee the weight no matter what you pay them. if you like her than thats what matters. i just dont see what the big deal is b/w 2 & 4lbs... it is still extremely tiny there is really no diference between your 3 pounder and a 4, 4 1/2 pounder

I'm sorry she's sick. You said you went in person to pick her up? If she didn't look the right size based on her age, you should have just walked away. That APRI registration isn't as good as AKC as far as I know either. I hope she stays smaller for you, but those weight charts are just guesstimates. I'm sure you're in love already and she'll do just fine in your home with the Chin. The important thing is she gets over the cough and the worms. You're not alone. Many people have gotten puppies with more severe problems from breeders they thought were reputable.

I never intended to have a tiny dog home. Then I got my Japanese Chin. He is a tiny nothing, but has been as healthy as an ox. LOL. This little girl looked tiny if she was 18 weeks old. I thought that's why she didn't have a full puffy hair do going either. I had seen so many photos of baby Yorkies and mine didn't look like a little fluff ball - so I assumed it was her adult hair coming in. It's kind of sad but she has been a nervous wreck since coming to my house. It appears she had no socialization whatsoever. And if it is true that this lady also has multiple different breeds going, she probably has never been in a house. I did see buildings out back of Nancy's house. Didn't know they were full of animals though. How sad. I don't think any dog deserves that. Honestly, if I wanted a 5 lb. Yorkie it seems they are out there but the price is generally $500-600 cheaper than what I paid. I thought I was paying more because this one was tiny. The vet didn't say he guaranteed she was 12 weeks, only that it was his guess based on the fact that she had no adult teeth showing, which is common for a pup that is over 4 mos. old. My little girl has none. I can only hope that she just has slow growing teeth. I haven't really ever done the puppy thing as my Japanese Chin was already 9 mos. when I got him 3 yrs. ago. He is what made me fall in love with tiny dogs. So little but the personality is the size of an elephant. LOL I am not in love with her yet, but the compassion I feel for her is tremendous. I did e-mail Nancy and she said that it was all a mistake on my part. That she never said this or that. And further, it is common for dogs to get sick like that. Also, she stated she had wormed the pup twice so she didn't know how it got worms again. But, she did say she would take the pup back. I just don't know what to do now. I want to take her back because I feel there was dishonesty on this breeders part. Yet, I can't imagine taking this little girl back to kennel life either. She deserves a wonderful home, and maybe with enough love and vet appts. she will adjust and love inside home life.
