| i had two maltese sisiters before i got coco and they were debarked. i bought them this way and i always felt so bad for them, i would never ever have a dog debarked i beilieve it is so cruel seeing as i owned 2 that were debarked. when i went to see them and they were trying to bark at me from excitement i just melted and fell in love with them because it was just air coming out no sound i felt so bad and i told my husband i have to take them, they just really touched my heart. what me and my husband did to help them and us know where they were was we put a bell on thier collar. it worked great they were able to identify were eachother were they were very close even ate out of the same bowl..lol. i really miss them but i know thier witha good person she even writes me letting me know how they are. so i guess the bottom line for me is i'm very against it. it's like someone taking my child's voice away because she talks to much. it's just rediculous! |

| Never, Never, Never I could never debark a dog, that is just my personal opinion. A dogs bark is his way of talking, imagine if someone thought that you talked to much and decided the best way to stop you was to remove your vocal cords. My first yorkie was a barker, he was four years old when I got him. I used a rolled up newspaper (tied with rubber bands) and would hit the wall, cabinet, whatever (but never him) and say NO BARK NO BARK NO BARK slowly and sternly. When he would stop, he got a treat. It did not work all at once, it took about 6 months before he finally got it. When I got my two males (that I have now, the first died at age 14), I started immediately with the paper, they only bark when a) they need to go outside to potty and want my attention, b) someone is either by my patio outside or the front door. And then I WANT THEM TO BARK AND LET ME KNOW SOMEONE IS THERE. They are not always perfect, but incessant barkers they are not. Positive reinforcment, lots of love, praise and treats for good behavior works. Not all at once, but be consistent. I am gone all day long for at least 11.5 hours, my neighbors say that my dogs never bark while I am gone. I have never approached my apartment complex and heard them barking. Now I hear my neighbors toy poodle all the time, but I too would bark if I was locked in a 4x5 bathroom for days on end, sometimes as long as 72 hours (that is three days folks). I have offered to dog sit, check on her, take her for gods sake, but they won't let me and it drives me crazy to think of that 4 pound baby stuck in a bathroom for hours while they go out to party. My boys are fixed, could not get her pregnant and love her. There is a knothole in our back fence and on the rare occasion that she is outside, she sticks her whole little head through the hole and my boys "kiss" her. Why people like that get dogs when they cannot be bothered is beyond me. I spend every moment I can with my boys and miss them like crazy when I cannot. I plan on a vacation this year, first one in 15 years and will not go somewhere that I cannot take them with me, I would rather stay home with them. Sorry, for the rant, people like my neighbor bug me. |

| "yes i've heard of it and it is the most sick thing in the world. that is their only way of communication. it's easy to train your dog not to bark and not cruel like cuttin his vocal cords. its absolutly horrifying' I really do not think this is the moSt sick thing in the world some people do not have a choice, I am a Yorkie breeder and lover but do tend to get upset with people that are fanatical. Just yesterday I stopped at 7-eleven to get buy a soda and left my little one in the car with the A/C turned on and as I am waiting in line these 2 women cane in saying "What a cruel person the one that left the Yorkie locked up in the car.... Really erks me and makes me mad, because I am such a good mom and I do not think someone leaving there yorkie in the car with the AC on for 5 minutes is cruel. But they see the little one jumping up and down and jump to conclusions. I think if you want to judge how someone takes care of there little ones look at there teeth and see if they have tarter. Mine get there teeth cleaned every year and are on advantage so they never have fleas. I think these judgements and accusation between breeders and yorkie lovers tends to get out of hand. If someone does not agree with you on something then they are horrible and abusive. Does anyone feel the same way? |

| ! Well I dont want my dog to bother my neighbors! dont get a dog! get a fish.... sorryThis almost got the best of me The problem is many people get a dog first and they fall in love with the dog without realizing how much it barks. Well, they are not going to get rid of a pet they are so attached with, so they go ahead and debark them so they can keep them. Somethimes especially with bigger Dogs the neighbors complain so much that it is either debarking or losing your best friend. Many people in todays society live in condos and apts and they do not have the luxury of a barking dog because the whole building will compalin. There is 2 sides to every story and I respect your opinion. |

Yes I agree with you there are two sides of why? but It is common knowledge that a dog communicates through barking, Im Hungry, there's a prowler, fire, Im cold, Im tied up etc.. all dogs Bark my two yorkies bark at a falling leaf my neighbors dog is always barking but They are dogs! should my neighbor complain I wouldn't rush out and debark them nor would I get rid of them because of it, I would try to train them not to bark( or try to) the choices of losing my babies or debarking them would never be an option. people that do live in condo's or apts knew first hand Dogs will bark & choose the option of bringing a dog home anyway, and finding out the hard way Oh we didn't know he would bark THAT much??? "there are dogs that do not bark" so in (my opinion) that side should have thought it out first. Debarking a dog is a harsh punishment. I think sometimes humans should try and put themselves in the dogs place. they have feelings to.... | |

| I agree with everyone that said that this is cruel and should be banned! There are some people that I'd like to "debark", but never a dog! I feel that its is the owner's responsiblity to research the breed before they adopt the dog as some breeds are more prone to barking.... and if they don't, then they have to take the time to learn training methods so that their dogs don't become "yappers." To the person that said "some people live in a condo, apt, etc...." I live in a condo and my neighbor is blind, so she has an extremely heightened sense for sounds... It never entered my mind to debark my dogs... It was my responsiblity to train my dogs not to "yap" so that they son't bother my neighbors! Its in a dog's nature to bark if they hear a strange sound to warn me, but other than that, I don't like or tolerate yapping, so I took the time to train them not to bark for no reason. To this day, my neighbor has never once complained of my dogs barking.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | That is a disgusting thing to do! Why would anyone do that to a dog is beyond me. Here's a suggestion! If a human gripes and whines too much, have them de-voiced! See how they like that!

| I have seen a no-bark collar that blows a puff of air in front of the dog. They have them at PetSmart. We began at the start, told kids and friends - no barking, even though it is quiet and cute when they are little. Our dogs do not bark often. Bronx barks at birds, both bark at doorbell (even on tv, now). They occasionally bark at night when they hear something (usually the kids). We hollar out - BRONX! or ZOWIE! and they generally stop. If not, I get up to see what is going on. We have a neighbor who got a dog recently. They fenced next to their house for the dog that never stops barking and is not allowed into the house. Today I noticed they refenced the back half of their yard to get their barker farther away from their house and closer to us. I wouldn't recommend de-barking, but de-dogging. I am not sure why they got this dog, but the only attention he gets is when he gets loose and they chase him down. Do the DESERVE this dog? Do the rest of us DESERVE to listen to this. Plus it took a week for Bronx to be able to go outside without running to the back of the yard to bark with him.

| I have read somewhere that if you snip the vocal cords that they will grow back and will have to be done again. I think the snipping isn't permant. |

| I think that it just plain cruel, that's like taking away your tongue. You have to teach them to be quiet, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't, but that's all a part of owning a dog. I was at a dog show last winter, and there was a little yorkie that was trying to "bark". I asked the handler what was wrong with her and she said that she had a cold. Yea, right! Why was she there? She was debarked AKC rules state that there should be no altering, (neuter, spay,) but yet this could go unnoticed? Makes you wonder...
