Never, Never, Never I could never debark a dog, that is just my personal opinion. A dogs bark is his way of talking, imagine if someone thought that you talked to much and decided the best way to stop you was to remove your vocal cords. My first yorkie was a barker, he was four years old when I got him. I used a rolled up newspaper (tied with rubber bands) and would hit the wall, cabinet, whatever (but never him) and say NO BARK NO BARK NO BARK slowly and sternly. When he would stop, he got a treat. It did not work all at once, it took about 6 months before he finally got it. When I got my two males (that I have now, the first died at age 14), I started immediately with the paper, they only bark when a) they need to go outside to potty and want my attention, b) someone is either by my patio outside or the front door. And then I WANT THEM TO BARK AND LET ME KNOW SOMEONE IS THERE. They are not always perfect, but incessant barkers they are not. Positive reinforcment, lots of love, praise and treats for good behavior works. Not all at once, but be consistent. I am gone all day long for at least 11.5 hours, my neighbors say that my dogs never bark while I am gone. I have never approached my apartment complex and heard them barking.
Now I hear my neighbors toy poodle all the time, but I too would bark if I was locked in a 4x5 bathroom for days on end, sometimes as long as 72 hours (that is three days folks). I have offered to dog sit, check on her, take her for gods sake, but they won't let me and it drives me crazy to think of that 4 pound baby stuck in a bathroom for hours while they go out to party. My boys are fixed, could not get her pregnant and love her. There is a knothole in our back fence and on the rare occasion that she is outside, she sticks her whole little head through the hole and my boys "kiss" her. Why people like that get dogs when they cannot be bothered is beyond me. I spend every moment I can with my boys and miss them like crazy when I cannot. I plan on a vacation this year, first one in 15 years and will not go somewhere that I cannot take them with me, I would rather stay home with them. Sorry, for the rant, people like my neighbor bug me. |
