Hello all,Im new to Yorkie Talk.I joined because I will be getting a Yorkie and I have been looking through a ton of sites and this one seemed to have the best atmosphere overall. Im a huge animal lover and I have an aunt who is amazing with animals.About a year or so ago she got a Yorkie and I fell inlove with the breed.Ive wanted one ever since.Im sorry if I sound reptitive but I want to do this right.I may get a Yorkie puppy from my aunt or a breeder,but Im having alot of trouble finding a good one close by.Alot seem way over priced,in fact I know there cheats cause all the ones Ive found charge thousands because they claim there dogs are minis,teacups,or babydoll face.Im no expert but I know there is no such thing as a mininature Yorkie and in my opinion they are all cute as a baby.:P So my first question is does anyone know a way to find a breeder online or a reliable breeder in Florida?My second question is about supplies,the sites Ive looked at all recommend something different,what are your preferences?And I wanted to know what you all thought about brushing their coat when its dry?I read that was wrong,have any of you had bad experinces doing this?And my final question is do any of you do personal obedience training,and if so what are your methods?Whoever wouldnt mind discussing these types of thing with me I would really appreciate it.It may be early but I really want to be prepared because I think its what all animals deserve.Thank you in advance.And I cant wait to meet new people and hear all about your babies.

Welcome to YT! First off, to you for knowing and not being fooled by the fact that there's no such thing as a miniature or "teacup" yorkie.

I always brush Ferdinand's hair dry. I can't imagine washing him or wetting him every day just to brush him?? His skin would get SO dry!

I don't know anything about finding a reputable breeder on the internet. My only recommendation would to be to research, research, research! I'm sure you can find someone on YT that can recommend a breeder to you, but defitnitely don't adopt a puppy until you've visited the breeder. And please don't buy a puppy from a puppy store - you'll just be supporting puppy mills, and that's just no good.

Hi and WELCOME to YT, it can seem like a mind field out there, trying to find the right Yorkie.

I agree there is no such thing as a TEACUP Yorkie, many use this term to describe a small size Yorkie.

As for a good breeder, recommendation is good, if you know anyone who has a Yorkie, also look on here and
see those offered for sale.

Always see the mother and the father if you can. Ask lots
of questions, I took a long time asking questions before I bought my little boy (Who is now 9 weeks)

Having had 2 Yorkies before who sadly, I felt I resuced due to their backgrounds, I wanted to make sure this time, that I got a good one. As sure as anyone can be.

You soon get a feeling when talking to someone about thier puppies. You instinctively feel uncomfortable if something isn't right, or sounds odd, those are best avoided.

Avoid Pet Shops as most come from Puppy Farms (As we call them in the UK) You call then something else in the USA.

I am sure many on YT will be able to help you in your search, and WELL DONE to you for doing all the research BEFORE you buy one.

Many people don't and live to regret it. I spoke to many many people/ breeders and pet owners who had litters before getting my little boy.

We travelled 450 miles to get him but he was the right one.

So I wish you all the sucess in the world YORKIES are a TRULY wonderful dog ....

Thank you for the warm welcome,I feel at home here already. My Aunt got her Yorkie from a good breeder and he has been trying to get her Yorkie pregnant,we have to wait for thirty some days now to find out if she is.If she is pregnant with more than one my Aunt said shed give me one.If thats the case I know the breeder is reliable,both Yorkie parents come from good homes,the Dad is a champion and the mother Yorkie I know personally is a beautiful,smart,spunky dog.So if she does give birth to a healthy litter I'll be more than blessed to have one of her pups.However you never know,she may not be pregnant or she may only have one.If that is the situation at hand I want to start learning about other options.I will definitely look up on breeders here,thanks for the suggestion.Its been crazy looking online for breeders nearby.In my opinion they over price the pup,I know dogs are great but paying several thousand for a pup that they have only had in there care for two,three months seems a tad much;I mean how much could the pup have cost them? Well either way I'll be prepared.I have done research on the breed,supplies,and do it yourself training. It was great to meet you and your precious pup

First off, welcome to YT! I agree with what has already been said to you. Talk, Talk, Talk to the breeder and if you feel at all uncomfortable, don't buy a puppy from them! They should be more than willing to answer all questions. Good luck in your search!

Welcome to YT. Where did your Aunt get her yorkie from, maybe you could get one from the same breeder. it sounds like you are very wise and have done some research.

I would suggest getting reference on any breeder. Look for small breeders, not large ones. The large ones are more likely to be puppy mills.

As for obedience. I take mine to obedience class. I enjoy the time I get to spend with them, and we are all learning. My main reason for taking them to obedience class is because I'd like to get into some agility. Not necessarily competing, but jsut for fun. Who knows, it might turn into competing.

I don't know any breeders in Florida as I live a long way from there.

I don't brush their coat dry, it can cause breakage and damage. In fact, I did this once and I saw what it did to their hair so now I always wet it down a little bit before I brush them.

As for obedience, I do all the obedience myself. I use only positive reinforcement. I start socializing pups right away, socializing is one of the most important things for your puppy. I also crate train my pups. It is the easiest, fastiest and most successful way to housebreak your puppy.

I have already looked to obedience classes nearby and cannot find any,so I have been researching how to teach my pup myself.I think it will be a positive experince for us both(If I get the luck of having one^_^)

Thank you for your input,if I find the proper breeder I'll be sure to keep that in mind.What do you think about a pen though?would that work as well as a crate?I ask because if I do get a pup from my Aunt it would be during the end of the school year.My Mother would be helping but of course she has things to take care of herself.So would it be alright to leave them in a decent sized pen with a bed and toys,etc. or is a smaller size space better?

hi and welcome! I learned the hard way after buying my first yorkie without doing enough research... I found YT, AFTER I had Tootie... I found my Hopey here, and THANK GOODNESS for her "Mommy Linda".. I searched for many months... if you pick a breeder, they should be EAGER to answer your questions! You can never ask enough in my opinion....
YT is great! It is so helpful to me and I feel like I have a little family here!

Hi and welcome to YT,you have come to a great site.I love this place and i have learned so much here.I have a little yorkie girl,she is almost 6 month's old.Her name is mystie joy .You are smart to do all this resurge before you get your puppy.I did the same,so i had a little understanding about yorkies when i got mine.I was very confused also about where to find a trust worthy breeder and i couldn't afford what most of them aked.So i desided to check with my vet (i lost my little dachshund back in april to kidney failure ,after 13 years.)They gave me the name of a lady they knew that raised them and who brought her puppy's to the same vet .So, they had seen my little mystie joy before i did,and they gave me all the info i needet to make up my mind .I am so glad i did get my little dog this way.I got to know the parents of my puppy and saw pictures of the grandparents as well.She comes from a very good bloodline and she is the sweetest little dog.As far as brushing her,i do so without wetting her coat and it works well for me.But i would recomend that you get a little brush with metal prongs.I tried it with another brush before and endet up with lots of tangles.Well,this is all the advice i have to give so fare since i am a fairely new yorkie mom too.As far as training her ,i took her outside a lot and still do.About every 2-3 hours,exept at night time.At night she holds it untill i take her out in the morning.I bought a little metal doggie playpin that i set up in my kitchen when i have to leave while i am at work.She doesn't pepee or popoo in there.That playpen is so handy.I have a second one that i have set up in my bedroom.I made it her little bed with sheets and blankets as well as a pillow.She loves it and goes to it when i ask her at bed time if she is ready to go "night night"Well, i hope you can use my little advice.God bless you.

First off thanks all for the warm welcome.Im really glad I picked YT to learn from.Everyone has been really nice and very helpful.I glad that you told me about the pen,I think it may be the best optition for me instead of a crate.Seems kinda cruel to leave a growing puppy in a small crate unless its for sleep.How long do you leave your puppy confined?I was just wondering what would be appropriate for training.
