OOOHHHH I hate that one too. I get that with Emma all the time-because she's 5 pounds. I've heard that she isn't "really a yorkie" since she's so big-a WHOLE 5 pounds!!! She's as yorkie as they come! I also hate the teacup or mini comment-when they either ask if she is one or say that they're thinking about getting a yorkie, but a "teacup", not a "big one". I explain that there is no such thing as a teacup, or a mini yorkie. People don't believe me-probably due to all of the marketing of this fictional type of dog.

People often think Bruce is mixed...However I often am the caretaker of his little pal Maurice the frenchie due to the nature of Maurice's dad's job that requires some travel...People always stop and gawk at the poor little guy, even just man handle him. It is ridiculous.

Well I don't get that one too much...but I do always get the DUMB question, lol...people always say, "Awww he's a little Yorkie???" like they KNOW he is, but they are just going to go ahead and ASK anyway???? I feel like saying, "A Yorkie? NO! Your eyes are just playing tricks on ya! HE'S A GERMAN SHEPHERD!" lol grrrr.

That happened to me at the store "The Icing". I had Rocky and the cashier was all "aaww how cute, I'm giong to get a yorkie, but he'll be a teacup" (Rocky is 5lbs). I politely gave her a brief description on the pricing and health of some "teacup" yorkies, and she listened, but I think she already had in her mind that she wants a teacup, and didn't care. Oh well, I tried I guess

I get that also .... I ask them to show me a teacup and let's see if she can fit ....
Monday is 4 lbs. and could not fit in a teacup at all ... BUT the groomer told me that anything under 5 lbs. is a TeaCup Yorkie ...I do not agree ... itz just a marketing ploy. I have seen some people refer to their Yorkies as Tea Pots ....(I guess those are bigger???)

I have had a few children around 5-6 years old ask what kind of dog it is, but not an adult yet. I had a few teenage girls ask me (where did you get your yorkie? I want one so bad)

I have a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie. Most people know what breed my Yorkie is but my Shih Tzu has been labled as everything from a "cute mutt" to a poodle.
The question that I find really amazing is when people ask me if they are both from the same litter! Hello! My Shih Tzu is 4 yrs old and 11 lbs, my Yorkie is 4 months old and 3 lbs. My Shih Tzu is white and carmel colored, my Yorkie is the usual black and tan Yorkie puppy colors. Shih Tzu's have a very small nose with NO bridge at all; Yorkie's have a bridge and a very different looking nose!!!! I just look at these people in utter amazement, before I answer their ridiculous question.
However it does not really bother me because I am used to it. Our children were adopted from Korea and are 2 yrs apart, both were adopted as infants. You would not believe the ridiculous questions I have gotten from strangers in regards to my kids.

Remember Yorkies can weigh from 1 1/2 pounds to as much as 14 (or more). Their colors can be different - their types of coats can be different. Some have ears up - some ears down - and to top it off they can have a dozen different haircuts.....

I have had my Yorkie for more than a year and during this time, I have only seen three others - and two of these were at pet stores. If you don't go where people with dogs go - you just don't see as many dogs out and around as you used to.

I have a Bichon Frise and even fewer people know or can remember the name of this breed (there are over 150 - probably closer to 200 different recognized breeds now). And - for people who don't have dogs (or have had their one dog most of their life) keeping up with the names of even the most common breeds isn't easy. And - for sure - a lot of people don't have the interest in dogs to begin with that most of us do. They love their own pet - but being a purebred this or a purebred that isn't something they're interested in at all - or pay much attention to.

With all the leash laws, etc. anymore - there are a lot of different breeds that I almost never see...... or better yet - never see.

People are always asking me what my little Yorkie is. I tell them that I know he looks like a loveable little Walt Disney mutt - but he really is a Yorkie. Can you imagine him with his one ear up and the other down sporting a home-done puppy cut? He, for sure, doesn't resemble the Yorkie that you see at the dog show - if you watch dogs shows or go to dog shows (a lot of people don't).

I have friends who have other purebred dogs - and they are ask all the time what their dogs are also.

It's not an annoying question to me at all. Actually, it's a very friendly question. I'm sure if I ask 50 strangers what breed of dog I was holding - most of them wouldn't know......

I agree! I brought Lillie to the vets last night and an older gentleman asked me what kind of terrier she was...I told him she was a yorkie...he then said.."I have never seen one that color with short hair" I just told him that she is only 19 weeks old and she still has her puppy coat...she will go through many changes...he probably thinks all yorkies are black/gold. If you aren't familiar with a breed or a "dog person" you aren't going to recognize any breed...I don't get upset when someone asks me what kind of dog they are...this way I can talk about my babies..both my babies look totally different...Sadie is black/gold with a silky coat that is not floor length and Lillie is very fluffy...If you didn't know they were both yorkies you would think they were two different breeds~!

Actually we had once a litter of 4 from our Giant Schnauzer girl with a German Shepherd and a Collie and two of the pups looked like a Giant Schnauzer, one like a German Shepherd and one like a Collie. We almost could have sold them as pure bread. Another time my blonde Hungarian Vizla had an affair with a black Great Dane and the litter of 13 (!) was divided in 6 blonde Vizlas and 7 black Danes... the only thing was that the blonde ones were to big for a Vizla and the black ones to small for a Dane. Other then that they had all the features...

This is why people should be striving to breed according to the standard and not because your dog has akc papers. This is why alot of yorkies are so different looking. Even in the ring you see bigger and smaller yorkies but they still look like a yorkie because they have been bred to represent the standard.

Couldn't of said it better......

Let's lift our glasses to the knowledgeable, devoted Breeders who actually try to preserve the beauty, intelligence and character of this wonderful Breed.
