| My dilemma! I have not posted in awhile, but always get good advice here, so here goes. I got my little girl a year and a half ago, and she is four now. She is the love of my life, and between my parents and me, very, very, seldom is she alone. I have a family wedding to attend two hours away in a few weeks. I will be taking Sadie with me, but she will be left in a strange (large) home for about six hours. I am actually losing sleep over this. She does have a crate, and although she has never used it, I brought it inside about two weeks ago and put her favorite pillow, and blankets inside of it. When I am on the computer, that is where she prefers to sleep. Little by little, I am closing the door more and more. I am trying to decide if it is better to let her roam my brother's house when we are gone, or to crate her for six hours. Is it cruel to crate a dog for six hours? I have a difficult enough time just trying to shut the door on her. If she was not so perfect, maybe it would be easier to shut the door. LOL Can anyone advise me on this situation? What if I just let her roam the house? She has never chewed on anything, nor wet in the house, but because this would all be strange to her, I don't know what to expect. Sorry that this is so long, and thanks in advance. Kate

| I would either crate her with water or only allow her only to roam one room (like a bathroom or laundry room). Dont worry ... she will be okay for 6 hrs alone. With water and food she will be fine. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | IMO she would do better in a crate. You would know she is safely confined in a strange place. She should be fine. I would worry more knowing she was loose. That's good to get her use to the crate before your trip.

| I agree with Ditsy... maybe you can close the door to the bathroom or a room that has linoleum. That way you could put her water, food, toys, and bed. I'm sure everything will be fine!

| I would be more likely to contain her in a small room such as a bathroom with food and water, some toys and maybe a wee wee pad (just in case). If she is not used to being crated regularly, this might seem strange and like a punishment to her. But if she had the ability to roam in a small room, she might be more content.

| I would put her in a small room too, and put her crate with her, door open... she will feel more at home being able to go into her crate.... I wouldnt let mine roam a strange home, there may be something she could get into that I was not aware of. Good Luck! Either way, in her crate or a room, she will do well

| I would definitely crate her or lock her in the bathroom or other small room. She may get into something harmful in your brothers house when no one is there.

| In a strange place she might act different. Get her used to the crate, gradualy increase the time she spends in it, and maybe try taking her to a friends house and keeping her in the crate, so she gets used to being in strange places, in her crate. If you can, go check on her between the wedding and reception. Also, maybe leave a shirt with your smell on it in her crate at your brothers to make the place feel more like home to her. As for 6hours, she should be fine.

| Thanks everyone. I like the idea of putting her in a small room, with her crate leaving the door open. She will have her favorite pillow and two baby blankets in it so she should be fine. I am going to confine her to water only, as she will be well fed right before we leave. I want to make sure she does not need to have a bowel movement while I am gone. She can hold her urine, but now that I think of it, she has had two bowel movements in my home, when I do have to leave her. I don't think that is bad for having her 18 months. The problem I have with her is that she gets separation anxiety and knows before hand when I am leaving. She just knows my habits. I can stay outside with her for an hour, and if she senses I am leaving, she won't do her duty. I can predict when she will leave me a present, and it has only happened twice. I am wondering if she could chew the rubber off of the bottom of the door, trying to get out. She has never chewed on anything, but one never knows, as this is new to all of us. Appreciate all of the replies. Many thanks. Kate

| I didn't read the other posts, so sorry if this was already mentioned. But I think putting her in an ex pen with her crate in it is a good idea, unless you think she can climb out of it. If she is scared and in a strange place, she may behave differently than she normally would. For example, I take Tink with me a lot to my mom's and she is very comfortable there but I never left her there alone, one day we decided to go shopping so I left her in my mom's bathroom. When we got home, somehow she had managed jump on the toilet then to the counter and then couldn't get down, she was sitting IN the sink and scared when we got back Poor baby. |

and get her one. Can they jump out of them? My girl hates being confined to one room, but I will try it again. The last time she was confined in a room, it was the laundry room and over a year ago. When I got home, she managed to jump on the hamper, and from there onto the window ledge. When I got home, there she stood and she could not jump, nor turn around. It was so pathetic. Lord knows how long she stood there, so I can relate to your story. I am afraid that if I put her crate in the ex-pen, that she could try to jump on top of the crate to get out. With our luck, she would probably get her paw caught on one of the wires. Thanks.

| Since she is getting used to using her crate and preferring to sleep in there while you're on the computer, it is probably becoming a place of security for her, and I think in a strange place, she would be less stressed in her crate because she would feel more secure in there. It would also give you the peace of mind to know that she is safe and can't get into something she shouldn't.

She has allergies, so I will give her a small Childrens; Benedryl tablet just before we leave, as it tends to make her sleepy. I don't give it to her on a regular basis, just when she itches like crazy, and she has been real good lately. Thanks.
