Question ^^Put deposit on Yorkie^^ Did i do the right thing????HELP!!

Hello All!! This is my first post, although i have been reading this forum for a good 3 hours now. And I have some questions and concerns that I'm sure you Yorkie experts can help address!

I have been looking into buying a little yorkie and after 3 weeks of researching and searching half of texas, i finally found what i think is the best deal (or so i hope!).

I found this little guy through an internet ad. The breeder is located near Austin and i recently went up to look at the guy and leave a $100 deposit.

When I got there, it wasn't the nicest of neighborhoods. Upon arrival, i noticed that there were two yorkies in decent size cages in her backyard covered with a tarp to avoid direct sunlight and other overhead elements. This didn't impress me much. After talking to her for a while, it seemed like she knew what she was doing as well as showing a strong affection for her animals. She then proceeded to show me where the mommy and puppies were. They were being kept inside an air-conditioned decent-sized shack in her back-yard as well. The 3 puppies were there with the mom and were being fed Eukanuba according to her. This is her first litter and she owns a total of three yorkies. The mother of my future puppy weighs 4 lbs and the father weighs 3lbs. I am purchasing this puppy for $1,000. He is the smallest of the litter, and while i was there wasn't eating as much as his brother and sister.

She also stated that he received his first deworming, had his dewclaws removed, and tail done as well. The puppy right now is 5 weeks old and i should be picking him up at the end of Sept. Both parents and puppies are AKC registered and even showed me the form i'd be mailing upon purchase. She also offered to give me copies of the parents AKC papers upon purchase as well.

My questions are, What types of things should i be concerned for. Is there anything else that i should ask her before paying the remainder. It being her first litter made me a little uneasy. The father and mother looked healthy but weren't groomed or bathed. She claimed they were to be bathed the following day.

Any advice and feedback is greatly appreciated. Sorry for a long post! Below are pictures of the little guy and his parents.

The first picture is of the mom, second of the dad, and the other two are of the actual puppy. I think i'm going to name him Petrie !!!

I am not a yorkie expert nor own one. I too recently found this site and found a wonderful breeder here. My future puppy should be born within the next few days and I'll fly down to pick him/her up in Dec.

Best wishes to you and hope someone will come along soon to address some of your questions.

hello and welcome to yt. I must say the mother is very pretty. im not much help but i wish u all the best of luck. by the way do you mind telling the name of the breeder and where in Texas she is located. I am bothered as to why she has two yorkies living outside in cages if those are the only two adults she has.

Welcome to YT!! I know its scary buying your first yorkie and want the find the best and healthiest pup you can. It sounds like you were a bit uneasy with what you saw..sounds like your warning flags were already up. Can you get the pup vet checked BEFORE you buy it? I have heard soooooooooo many horror stories of pups dying shortly after purchace that I think a good vet check is in order before you follow through with your purchace. Im not sure how it all works with breeders. I was wondering too why the parents are being kept outside in a shack? He is certainly a cutie pie and the parents are healthy looking...I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination..just try to be helpful

Ummmmm...doesn't sound like the best of situations, but maybe not the worst, either???

I personally would not have purchased from this person, but if you already put down a deposit, and feel confident that the parents you were shown ARE the parents, etc., it may not end up badly. ???

So hard for us to advise you, and of course, hard for you to decide what to do, when you had your own personal warning flags. I think that for that price you could have found a more reputable breeder. But you're certainly not alone in the "live and learn" department when it comes to acquiring one of these precious babies.

I've only had mine about four months, and I was just thinking HOW happy mine have made me, and our whole family. I just can't imagine life without them now. They are utter delights. You have so much fun ahead of you! And I love the name you've picked out!

Her name is Debbie and she is located in Leander Tx. As far as the shack is concerned, it really wasn't that bad, it was newly built, air-conditioned and pretty spacious. The puppies were there w/ the mommy and the father and another female were outside. She also has some rare birds as pets and a pretty big aquarium inside her home.

As per the reason why the dogs are outside, her husband wont let her have them inside because they just recently build their home.

The price is a little high, but actually the lowest i've come accross in regards to this puppies' size. She claims he'll be around 3 to 3.5 lbs which is the ideal weight i'm looking for.

She is also giving me 48 hours to take it to a vet of my choosing after the official purchase date. So the good thing is i'll have an experts opinion regarding the puppies overall health.

Oh god! I dont think i explained my self right...Haha, The mommy is in the airconditioned little house with the three babies and the dad is outside in the cage along with another 2yr old female yorkie in the adjacent cage. And she also isn't going to take them out of that little house untill they get their second set of shots. She doesn't want them to get any virus' from the yard.

It's sooooooo hard to tell by looking at pictures, but are you certain the father weighs no more than that? He looks so tall in the picture - that's why I'm asking.

The conditions don't sound ideal, but.. in this case I would just follow your gut. Once you see a puppy it's hard not to fall instantly in love and want to take it home and I imagine you've probably already made up your mind. The mother is gorgeous (bathed or not), has really nice dark coloring and nice features (I couldn't make out the sire all that well in the pic).

Will you be signing a contract? Most breeders offer some type of health guarantee (1 or 2 yrs) against hereditary disorders commonly found in yorkies. Many breeders also include a non-breeding contract. It's good that she's giving you time to have the puppy checked out by your own vet (take a stool sample too) but what would happen if there is a medical issue with the dog? What would she do to compensate you then?

I find it odd that this being her first litter she is charging such a high price - is she an unexperienced breeder or is this just this particular female's first litter (you mentioned that she had two)? If she's inexperienced and has never bred, then how can she gaurantee that this puppy will be a certain size? And are her dogs champions?

I am not by any means trying to deter you from getting this puppy - I think he's a cutie! Just don't be afraid to ask lots of questions of her - make sure that you are covered if anything should happen. It breaks my heart to see so many people dealing with or getting ripped off by irresponsible breeders.

Good luck with your decision!

I myself would not have gone with this breeder. I don't like yorkies to be raised outside even if it is in another building. That means less contact with the dogs and socialization problems. In my opinion, they should always be raised in the house with the rest of the family. But everyone has different standards. I would also be curious as to the health guarantee, I would definately check into that and see what she would do if the puppy did have a health problem that the vet found.

The puppy is adorable though. And I think the name you picked is cute too.
Good luck with him!!!
