| Pet Stores and Irresponsible People Since I just moved to Arizona I have been going shopping and it's like a ritual thing with me that every time I go into a petstore I have to find a puppy play with it and name it will 2 days ago I went to the mall and there were two yorkies the first was a female and the second was a male they both were the same price 2500.00 but the female was sold! So I had to play with the male every time I play with the dog I ask to see the papers and so I asked the lady for them and she went back and checked and told me that they would have to order them then she left. This little boy was not little his paws were huge and he seemed like he had kennel cough and the little female had to have something wrong with her because she was like 1/3 the size of him and I mean she was SMALL! I decided to name him rascal because he loved to play! When I left the store I was about in tears because the poor animals just looked so sad and depressed so my mom was like there are alot of you on yorkietalk so you should start something to stop puppymills and pet stores! Well I thought about it and didn't know what to do and didn't know if there was anything I could do!! Well last night I went to another mall and went into their petstore and played with a little girl who was 3500.00 and named her Kaya so we played and I asked to see her papers and to my surprise they had them so I looked through them and found out that she had a pinched trechua and something else wrong with her throat and on top of that she looked nothing like a fullbred yorkie her legs were as thin as a toothpick and her body was wayyy to small so I wondered if she was a chorkie! I don't mean for the post to be so long but I just can't stand it that if people weren't so ignorant those puppymills and petstores would be shut down! I was wondering if there is anything I or anyone else can do to stop this way that these poor little defenseless animals are being treated! I mean anyone who I talk to I tell them about puppymills and petstores and that if they want to buy a dog buy from a breeder but I want to do more to better the lives of the animals and more to come! Any info would be greatly appreciated! Because what to do! Thanks, Jocelyn P. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | You could try working with Rescue groups to get legislation to ban these places . It is so sad these poor babies deserve so much better.

| I wonder if that puppy with the big paws (Not trying to defend the puppy store @ all!!!! I'm with U on they should take better care of their puppies!) will be a larger Yorkie like my Tiffanie? I know her paw was so big for her 6 weeks of age I couldn't beleive it and now Sir. Lancelot's is bigger too...But they are full blooded 100% AKC Yorkies! And I know how U feel about pet stores...My ex sister in law bought her Yorkie from a pet store in Greenwood or Indy one and he's got that petela (Spelling there) and her vet said he has to have 2 operations on them and she said something else is wrong with him too...I told her about puppy mills and pet stores U know what her response was? Oh, I don't care I just wanted a Yorkie!! I can't understand why people would be this way to buy a sickly baby and not worry about it's health until the problems arise!! I hope things can be done to stop this! Good luck in search for help. Hugs, Lee & babies |

| I think the problem is that people are uneducated about this problem. I, for one, had no idea til joining forums like these. I actually learned about it on myspace when joining a different yorkie group. If you were to ask most people on here, they would tell you that when they bought their first one, they didn't know any better. I think you are doing the right thing as far as telling everyone you know. I guess the next thing could be maybe to write something to your local newspaper (maybe a letter to the editor) maybe that way more people will see it. Maybe make a magnetic sign for your car, saying how to NOT buy puppies from pet stores and so on. Or you could make some flyers and have pics from the interent with the conditions of the puppy mills. There are several ideas that we can do as common people. We are lucky and live in a decent sized town where we don't have pet stores with dogs in em. But I still try and educate around my town so they don't go to the bigger cities and buy one of these pups, or direct from a puppy mill. Hope some of this helps.

| I found a new pet store the other day & was excited how close to my house it was. So, I was loading up my basket with all the normals that I spoil my baby with, when my daughter came over saying "mom, they have puppies here". So.....I went & looked & it was the typical puppies in glass cages. It made me SICK! One little baby was sound asleep with his head in a pile of diahrea. I quickly started unloading my basket & my daughter asked me what I was doing. I told her (loud enough for the owner to hear) that I would not spend a dime in a store that sold puppies in this manner & was so careless with their care. I left the store wondering the same thing....what can be done? I know that my single lost purchase won't hurt them too much. I will be sure to tell all my friends not to shop there either, but this certainly is not a cure. |

| I would call your local animal welfare or spca to report the awful conditions. And also flood your state and US legislators with phone calls and letters demanding legislation banning mills but also demanding that any business who sell puppies must give proper care. As for ever getting rid of pet stores completely I just think that it won't happen. Unfortunately there are too many people who get caught up in the "Oh look at the cute puppies" and they also think that buying from a pet store is saving that one puppy instead of realizing that they are adding to the problem. My own mother who has been informed about the mill problem a zillion times will still come home from the Amish farmer's market and tell me how many cute yorkies they have for sale for $100! It's so frustrating! |

| Wouldn't I get in trouble for boycotting petstores or even giving out flyers at the mall because my mom will be working at the mall and I thought about handing them out there and just leaving them there or handing them out in front of the petstore!! |

| In my area, we use to have tons of pet stores, but now we don't. The only ones we have are Petco and PetsMart - PetsMart only has animals that need to be adopted from the shelters and Petco does not sell cats/dogs, etc. There is one place that is like 2 hours away (I have seen them advertised) that sells dogs.....AKC approved pets and they look very "high-end", but I have never been there to check them out. For some reason, I have never approved of stores like this (even when I was growing up). Those poor, poor babies!
