| HELP romeos crying! please help me i dont know what to do. i got romeo over 4 weeks ago and he has been sleeping in his crate every night. he still cries non stop everynight when we put him in and sevreal times throughout the night. he also wakes up around 5 and starts crying again. when we go get him his entire face is soaking wet. how do i make him more at ease with his crate he absolutly HATES it! i was wondering if because he was shipped to me if maybe he still associates the crate with the long plane ride? any advice? |

| Are you putting him in the same crate he came in when he was shipped? That might be a problem... I could see if he had a rough flight he would associate the crate with the bad experience, so you have to work on re-introducing him to the crate in a positive way. I would try putting him in there for very short periods of time . Start out giving him a very small treat, petting him and praising him, and give him a few of these. Then, put a treat inside the crate, and encourage him to go in there and get it. Close the door for 5 to 10 seconds (don't lock, just close) and praise him and give him a treat when he comes out if he doesn't cry. You'll have to continue to do this for short periods throughout the day, gradually increasing his time in there. Set a time, ( use a very short time in the beginning, under a minute) and reassure him while he's in the crate, and when you let him out praise him. If he doesn't cry, then reward him with praise and a treat. do not do this if he cries. Just ignore the crying and let him out after the set time. You don't want him to begin to learn that crying will get him attention! This is a lot of work, but you'll be successful if you are consistent. He'll start to associate the crate with something positive, and eventually he'll like being in there. Both of my dogs love their crates, they are like little dens to them. I wish you luck, and I hope this helps! Your puppy is adorable!

| is he still in the same room with you - can he see you even though he's in his crate? He may just be panicked because he can't see you. I would also try getting him used to it for shorter periods during the day - even sit outside the crate for a bit while he's in there and reassure him that it's ok - if he's quiet, reward him. I definitely think having him in the same room in a spot where he can still see that you are there will help.

| Have you tried putting a sheet over the crate when you go to bed at night?

You are so right! Schatzi is like that sometimes, and also she does not like to have her crate on the floor. I just put her crate on the couch, or have her crate elevated somehow and she doesn't make a peep. When she first came home, I always had her in her crate at night, but the first week I had her crate on my nightstand, with the door facing me so she knew I was right there. She did great. Then after that, I had her in her crate on the couch facing me when it was her bedtime and she did okay. Now, She sleeps downstairs in her crate every night, but she still needs to have her crate on the couch. I cover the sides with a towel and she is just fine .

| I'm sorry you're having that problem. Poor little baby! We were so lucky because Nootie didn't cry, not even once. Maybe you should put him in a different area and put something in there with him that might give him some comfort, like an old tshirt that you were wearing (not washed). I'm sorry I'm not much help on this for you. |

| Mitzi is 9 y.o. and sleeps in the big bed ever since my husband brought her home. We share the bed equally: she occupies one half and we have the other half... She was 4 when I got married to my husband and I had some adjusting to do. Now we have the problem that I can't sleep when Mitzi is not here . Maybe you could give him a big soft stuffed animal to cuddle on in his crate and put the crate where he can see you. If the crate is the problem maybe you could get him a baby playpen. BTW I couldn't bare the crying. He would be in our bed at the first cry. |

| Jefferspet carries the "Comfort Pup" and it's a great price. It sounds like a mothers heartbeat. Just go to www.jefferspet.com and type in: Comfort Pup in the search box. Bonamassagirl had great advice too.

| My little 8-week old slept with me the first night I got him and has every since (unless he wants to get up and move somewhere else himself). He never cried a half a second.....just snuggled up, purred and went sound to sleep. He wore a belly band - but still almost never pee'd during the night. And, he slept a solid 7 to 8 hours from the start. And - this is a little guy that I put in a playpen for about 5 minutes once. He turned into a crying, whinny, screaming little noise machine. I had no idea all that noise was inside him. Well - we never did that again!!!!! Personally, he was miserable - and I couldn't stand it either. I bought him a big doggy bed when he was so tiny - there was room for 40 of him in this bed. But he totally fell in love with it - and on his own, (when I was still up) - he would run and crawl into that bed and take long naps on his own all the time. He really totally loved that bed and knew it was his. It was out in the open where he still felt he was with all of us - and he certainly was awake and watching us a lot of the time --from his comfy little bed. Good luck! Carol Jean |
