| Hello and Help Hi all, I hope I'm not breaking every rule. I'm trying to learn how to do this right. I also hope to do some camping with our new Yorkie puppy, Little Bit, when my husband retires. We mostly make short trips now but are looking forward to spending more time in our fifth wheel. My immediate need is for a traveling crate. I am trying to choose between the Canine Camper and the Port A Crate without ever having seen either of them. Anyone that has an opinion would be appreciated. My 3 month old Yorkie weighs about a pound and a half right now so should be under 5 lbs. I would think. Anyone have an opinion on that? Anyway I would love to hear from other Yorkie owners/fans, Donna |

| Hi Donna, welcome to YorkieTalk. We also go camping and use the KittyWalk Stroller, it can be used as a crate also and a stroller for the 2 of our babies. They love their stroller and love to ride and watch people. We also have the Happy Trails stroller for those times when the bugs are out. We have a new Sunline travel trailer with slide outs and with no floor grates and camp with our 2 little yorkies 4 1/2 lbs each. Be careful of those camper floor grates also with your pup. Ours use puppy pads inside other wise I'd probably spend most of my time in and out with them. Good luck and Happy Camping ! Last edited by Yorkie24U; 07-15-2006 at 08:25 PM. |

| Camping & Crates Thanks for warning me about the floor vents. I hadn't thought of that. I hope you are just thinking I need to put something over them to keep Little Bit from getting her foot in it and not that she would decide to use it for her potty. LOL~ I don't even remember what the vents look like - seems like they are slits about 1/2 inch apart. We had to live in it for two weeks last year during the hurricane and haven't been camping since!! We do have reservations for Thanksgiving and hope to go at least once before then. We only have one slide out but if we should ever get to go on longer trips, we probably will be looking for more slideouts on the next one. Thanks for the friendly welcome - Good to talk to a fellow Yorkie loving camper! Donna |

| Pics Can you believe I don't yet have any pictures?? As soon as I (1) get a camera and (2) learn to use it, I'm going to do that. I really do intend to because I know I'm going to hate not having photos of these darling puppy days. Donna Also in TX |

| Hi! We just returned from a month and a half stay in our 5th wheel in the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado with our Rex and Rowdy. Our 5th wheel has floor vents and neither of our guys had any problems with them, even when they were little. Rowdy is 4 1/2 lbs now, and he was in the 5th wheel for 3 weeks last year when he was 4 months old. I didn't even think about it being a problem and it wasn't. They both did great this year - Rowdy is almost a year and a half and Rex is 5 1/2 months old. The only problem this year is that they came down with diarrhea after about a month. They probably had giardia - but it doens't usually show up without lab work. We took them to the vet in New Mexico and they decided to treat them for giardia and they did great, once we started the antibiotic. It was not fun to have 2 little guys with runny poop!!! Thankfully, they didnt' seem to feel sick or stop eating! They were their usual selves, just with runny poop!!! Other than that, they did great on the trip. We bought 2 of the metal X pens and put them together so that we could set it up outside the trailer and then they could get into it off leash and romp and play in the grass. They loved it!!! Good luck with your travels - we love traveling with our guys - they are great conversation starters and you'd be surprised at how many Yorkies there are in RV parks - it's amazing, I think they are the most common breed that we see.

| Canine Camper Hi Rowdy's Mom, We may end up at the same campsite some time. I'll have to keep an eye out for the other Yorkie campers. So far, I've met lots of nice folks on this site but no one has mentioned either of the Portable Crates I mentioned. Maybe they are not that good or popular. I'm just scared not to have something to keep her in. She is so tiny and I do want her safe. Donna |

| Hi Donna- I'm neither a camper nor a crater so I can't help you out there. But I wanted to welcome you and Little Bit to YT!!!! If you camp regularly, an X-pen is a great idea for outside time. There are lots of places that sell them - I got mine on Ebay for $20!! With your baby being tiny, an X-pen would be really good. See about a car seat for the driving portion (check out the Snoozer Lookout Console Seat). A good car seat is a safe way to travel with your little one. Hope this helps and look forward to seeing your posts (and photos of Little Bit when you get them).

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. We haven't camped in a long time. The older I get the worse I get about wanting to be out and putting up with mosquitoes and such. Plus I ended up doing more work on our "relaxing" camping trips than I would if I were home...LOL My digital camera is one of my best investments so I hope you get one soon and then post some pictures.

The carseat mention is a good one though. We use one in town, we have a console carseat and a buddy lookout - but on loooong trips like we just took (3500 miles), they stay in them most of the time (best) but not always (not so good) because they get so tired of the carseat and need a break. You don't want to put her in a crate when you are driving because if there is a sudden stop, she will hit the side of the crate- it's just as dangerous as using nothing. The other thing to watch out for traveling is trash on the ground when you stop to let them potty. Rowdy doesn't pick up anything off the ground, but Rexy will eat ANYTHING. I have to watch him like a hawk!!! Good luck with the camping!!!

| Welcome to YT. as for the crates..We don't have one as pricey as the ones that you have mentioned. I got a couple of the cheaper ones from Target. I love them. they are so portable. I use a small one in our "DOG HOUSE"(motor home). We also bought 3 X-pens and put them together to make one big 'yard' in front of the moter home. We don't have to worry about them leaping out the door when we open it and they got lots of room to play. Plus... we can sit in the 'yard' with them.

| Xpens Wow! Sounds like I need an X Pen and I never heard of them before Yorkie Talk. I have been looking at the car seat thingies but was afraid Little Bit would jump out. Is that not a problem? Where is the best place to get these things?? Thanks for all the help. I am learning something from every one of you. As of now, we have a wire crate in the house that she sleeps in or stays in if I am out for a bit. She seems to like it. If something scares her, she will make a beeline for it. When I have taken her to the vet, I have put her in one of those little toy carriers for stuffed animals. Its just her size and looks so cute. I do always hold it underneath as well though in case the lock should come undone. Have any of you had a problem with wicker dog beds? I wanted to get one of those for after we get through the puppy chewing on everything stage. Right now we are using a complete washable one from Walmart. Thanks again all. You are most informative Donna |

| You can get an xpen from Ebay. Sometimes Petsmart has them. Get the highest one you can get some yorkies scale the walls and jump out of them. My two dont but if they do you can always take a sheet and make a cover for it. Car seats you can get on ebay and alot of other places also
