| anyone ever hear of an abscess/infection from rabies shot? I took both of my dogs to the vet last week for regular check-up. They both got rabies vaccines, but ChaCha (my 3 1/2 lb chihuahua) had a terrible reaction. She didn't even walk for 2 days! We had to carry her out to potty or to the potty pad, she refused to eat or drink, and she cried loudly whenever she moved. After notifiying the vet, she was placed on pain medicine, but she's had this huge lump on her hip ever since the shot. So today we once again headed back to the vet and now she's on antibiotics and another pain/anti-inflammatory med. She's also running a fever. The vet said it was a reaction but she has an infection at the site. He said the lump could rupture and to look for fluid draining out of her hip. Of course my husband and I are pretty upset and since they already receive each shot separately my husband wants to refuse the rabies vaccines from now until forever, except that she's 2 years old. The vet said we should just try a different brand of vaccine. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? |

| Poor baby...I'd have to agree with your hubby! I wouldn't get her vaccinated for rabies again...next shot could bring an even more severe reaction. Most vets will okay no more rabies shots when they've had severe reactions...I'd talk to the vet about that. I hope she gets better quickly! Sending get well wishes your way!

| Our last dog had a sever reaction to the rabies shot....on the way home she quit breathing and her tongue turned blue so we drove like crazy back to the vet and they gave her something to counter act the shot....but the next time she had it we stayed at the vet for 2 hours and no reaction. I would try a different vaccine....its too scary to go without it. |

| My Jewels had a slight reaction nothing like that though. She was achy and cried a little bit if you picked her up. If my dog had that kind of reaction I would see if they would waive the shot. I really dont see why most yorkies need rabie shots anyway since they are primarily indoor dogs

| One of mine had a reaction once- but not a bad one like your experience. He developed a large, hard lump where he received the shot. It didn't hurt or appear to bother him in anyway. It was kind of like scare tissue, I guess. Over time (months) it went away. My vet checked it several times and said as long as it wasn't bothering him and continued to shrink to leave it alone. The next time he got his shot he didn't develop any lump at all. |

| They can draw blood and take a test (titer, I believe) to see how much vaccine they still have in there system. My yorkie, Kramer always had a hard time with his vaccinations so my vet would run the test every year to see if he really needed the shot or not. He usually ended up getting one about every 3rd year. The test cost about $50 but it was so worth it to me. You might see if your vet could do that next year. |

| thanks everyone for the well wishes and advice. She ate a little chicken, her favorite, this afternoon so I'm taking that as a sign the antibiotics are starting to work, although she still has a fever. Has anyone else taken a rectal temp on their little dogs? The vet taught me how and it's actually easier than on a baby. I worked in a neonatal icu for years and I was more nervous with my dog than any of my patients! Go figure. |
