| Still More Questions - Adult Female Yorkie Wow, thanks for all the quick replies. I am the one who is considering buying my first Yorkie, a three-year young female. The breeder just emailed me a big letter, and I am in the process of calling her to finalize this. The dog was $650, and here is what she told me: QUOTE I would be willing to take $50 off the purchase price, so that would allow you to take her to your vet. At no time will I be responsible for any vet bills. If your vet would find any health problems return Zoe to. I just weighed her and she weighs 6 lbs. Her tail is docked, but I didn't know about the dew claws so she has them on her front paws. I groom her myself and clip her claws. She hasn't ever had any problems with the. She doesn't chew on anything, other than her toys. Her teeth are in good condition but could use a polish. Zoe has never had any health problems. I don't consider c-section a health problem. I don't allow my dogs to bark and carry on. They will definitely let you know if something, someone is outside they are very alert little dogs. As for being housebroken, I don't think you would have to start over from scratch. I hve taken her to other peoples' houses, and she has been fine. She stays sitting on my lap. Zoe is used to being around children, as I have grandbabies that are around alot that handle them. UNQUOTE OK. I am ready to move with this deal, but first I need some more help. One breeder answered a question earlier, and I am hoping she will see this. I think her name if YorkieRose and she made an excellent comment. Here are my questions: DewClaws - Do your dogs have front and back removed. Zoe only has the back claws removed. Is this the norm? Her Name - I would love to rename her Sadie. Is this possible with a dog three years old? Health - The fact that she has had probably more than one litter, does this still make her a healthy dog? I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I have not had a dog in years so I am wondering at what age do breeders quit breeding their dogs? Thanks everyone. I am so excited, and I can bet my life that this email is not boring anyone, as you all seem so loving with your animals. I love that. Can't wait to buy clothes for her if this works out. Kate |

| I am so glad you are considering an older dog. Has she been spayed? You might have answered that earlier but I didn't see it. As for her teeth--placque on teeth can cause heart problems so if she needs "polishing" that means she needs to be anesthetized for the cleaning. She can be spayed then too if needed. So, before that is done, she should have a blood panel..This might not be necessary as she has had anesthesia without problems. But, my vet does the panel anyway. Most Yorkies are not born with back dewclaws, only front ones. They are usually removed when tails are done. I am somewhat appauled that a breeder didn't know about dewclaws but that is another topic. You need to take time off the first week if you work..especially IF her mom has been home with her. You will still have to do house-training as she is trained to her current house, not yours. X pens work well for keeping them safe when you are away.. And, you sure can change her name. Sadie is pretty close to zoe when you pronounce Zoe as ZOEY. You can gradually change her name by using the new and old name interchangeably when doing fun things. It will not take long if she associates Sadie with woooo-hoooo good stuff and snuggles and doing real fun things that she loves. Good luck with your new girl and send pics when you get her. We like that!!! |

| Yorkie She sounds like a good pet potential for you. $600/spayed/shots, sounds fair to me. Declaws are nothing to worry about..yes, it is best to remove them, but many do not. Just make sure to clip the nail..some forget they are there. Having pups and now spayed would never bother me..all my girls have had babies and live long lifes. She is only 3..couldn't have had dozens of babies...many breed until 7 or 8..I perfer 5 to 6 yrs. You can change a name..done it many times. I bought a girl named Chelsea, changed it to Candy...for about a week I called her Chelsea-Candy ,then dropped the Chelsea part..just combine two names for awhile..they learn fast. Best wishes |

| Thank you. OMG, I am addicted to Yorkie Forums now. I love it. I was very surprised about the dewclaws as well. In fact, I will be calling the breeder later tonight. Are they ugly, or what is the deal that they remove them. At this late stage of her little life, I think it could be too traumatic for that. I just talked to a vet and they charge $80 for teeth scaling, etc. He said they can sometimes do it without anesthesizing the animal, but most of the times they have to. I read somewhere it is dangerous to anesthesize these little dogs. True! She weighs 6 lbs. and that is tiny, but I guess they are alot tinier than this alot. I can probably meet this lady/dog at Fred Meyer's parking lot tomorrow. She lives an hour and a half away, and it so happens it is my Dad's birthday tomorrow, and he want to travel to this town and antique shop. If she lives close by, we will go to her home. If not, she will prob. meet us in the parking lot, but I am not ready to take her tomorrow as I need a crate, toys, food, bed, etc. Besides that, I think I need to spend time at her home with the dog, but at least I could see how the dog reacts to me away from home. Is this a good idea? Many thanks. Kate Quote:

| Hi Kate! I personally think you will want to take her tomorrow! I hope you do! She will need a crate, food, and some squeak toys or something safe she can play with. I'm a little leery about this so called breeder who knows nothing about dewclaws and could let a 3 year old go! Especially if she is a lap dog as the woman states. Do you think she may have underlying health problems because the lady said she wouldn't pay vet bills? Just wondering. Sounds like Zoe/Sadie needs you very much! I think I would ask the "breeder" for a $100 discount so she can have her teeth cleaned. Make SURE the vet uses isoflourine gas to anesthetize her! Some of the other ones can be deadly on Yorkies! Also, I would ask my vet about the dew claws, but would probably leave them alone since she is grown. You don't wnt to traumatize her any more than the idiot who is selling her! |

| Declaw You won't even see the declaws, the leg hair covers them. They are a tiny little toe with nail on it...has anyone warned you about Yorkies yet? They are a sickness that makes seemingly normal people lose all sense of reason...and they are like potato chips..hard to have just one...LOL |

| Zoey Everything is a gamble, but at $600 I would take it. The breeder said if there was a health problem she can return her. Believe me a vet can find something wrong with any dog if they try hard enough. Plus, a breeder can only keep so many dogs..that is why breeders like Whispersmom and myself place retired dogs..if we didn't we would have so many there would be no time or money..dogs suffer when a breeder refuses to do what is best for the dog. |

| Thank you for your helpful info. I cannot bring her home tomorrow, as I am leaving to go to that town early tomorrow AM, and don't think it would be right for the dog to bring her home. I would not have had time to purchase food, crate, toys, etc. In fact, I am thinking of meeting this lady at the Fred Meyer parking lot tomorrow, just go get a feel for the dog. Then, next week I would want to see where she has lived for the three years of her life. My week is really busy, and I want to be able to spend two full weeks with it, before I get back into my regular schedule. I am retired, but I have dental appts., birthday parties, etc., coming up this week. I called a vet and his nurse said she could not believe a breeder did not remove its dewclaws. But, she said don't let this discourage you. She said it is very costly, and it usually is done when the pup is three days old. I would not have it done at this late stage, as I think it would be too painful for the dog, and ME. She has been spayed. If you can add to this, please do. I have not had a dog in 20 years, but am dead set on a lovely Yorkie. Thanks. Kate Quote:

| YorkieRose, I already have Yorkitis big time. I just hope this all goes through. I have pictures, that the breeder sent me on the internet, but don't know how to post those. Thanks for the tip on the declaws (dewclaws?). Guess I have been calling them the wrong thing. I have not had a dog in twenty years, and I am ready. My world is turned upside down right now. I cannot eat or sleep. LOL This is the most excited I have been in years. I just hope I will be an excellent Mom. OMG, now I am speaking Yorkie Forum language. Kate York Quote:
