| Brushing My yorkie is 8 months old and she hates to be brushed. I know I have to do it often so I do, but it is so difficult. I have 3 different types of brushes and when you start brushing her, even if you use the handle of the brush to touch her, she freaks out. Which makes it especially hard to brush her face. I get her groomed at least once a month somtimes twice, but I like to brush her everyday because she looks so nice. Any suggestions on how to make it a more pleasurable experience, for both of us? |

| what kind of brush tips are you using? They say the wooden ones are really good for sensitive skin. I don't have one but would love to have one. Of course, I always brush my babie's coat every night and use the pin brush. Tiger isn't particularly thrilled with the brushing even though I have been doing this since he came home. . .so what I have been doing is while he brushes his teeth chewing on the bristles, I use my other hand for brushing his coat. Then when I comb the hair on his face, I have the breath mints on one hand and as he tries to get it off my hand, I use my other hand to for combing . . . |

| Hobbs used to be so aweful when it came to brushing! You have to firmly tell her NO when she starts acting up while getting brushed. You may have to let her take a break until during brushing until she really gets used to it. It's kinda like potty training...you just have to be firm and persistent. |

| We've got a long way to go, also, but after initial troubles we're making some progress. Don't know if it will work with anyone else's baby, but what started making a difference for us was my starting to brush Bailey when she's sleeping - or half asleep anyway. Even as she woke up or became more alert, she was more tolerant of the brusing. And it seems (a bit early to tell for sure) that she's more tolerant of brushing whenever it's started. Oh, yes - we also give her lots of treats while she's being brushed. She still fusses about having her chest and the insides of her legs brushed, but it does seem to be getting a little bit better. |

| This is how I broke my dogs from squirming during brushing and cutting nails: For brushing, I use a small purse size pin cushion brush and I spray them with a leave in conditioner to help ease out tangles. They are in my lap and I kiss them on the head and wrap my arms around them to make them feel secure. Then I start brushing and when they get to squirming I stop for a second and kiss them and scratch their back, which they love. I tell them they are doing so good sitting still and then I will take another brush stroke until I have the back done then I flip them over on their back and kiss them and rub the chest and them work the same process for the feet. They are starting to fall asleep when I brush them now. For the face I just hold the head next to my chest and work on the side fartherest from me. Then when they are ready to get up I use a finishing comb on the back and a slicker brush on the legs. OH! I also use a flea comb on the moustache of the dog after I brush the face. No matter what you try, don't give up you will find what's right for you and your baby.

Now THAT'S the way to brush a dog. I was feeling pretty good about brushing Bailey pretty well with very little conflict this evening, but your way sounds like LOTS more fun! | |
