| Can I ask when these were "acceptable" training methods? My parents took in a badly abused dog about 30 years ago and I VIVIDLY remember how sternly my parents taughts "US" (the humans) how to act around her. She was very vicious and large. She pulled my 6'2" father off of his feet the first day...and stood over him... We were explicitly told to be gentle with her and Gain her TRUST...and reward her every time she followed the rules of her new home.. My dad was so stern with us about the treatment of our dogs. He prided himself on having well trained dogs...that could be trusted...and she grew to be one... I cannot tell you what my father would have done if we had ever smacked our dogs with newspaper or shoved their noses in poo... He was no "expert" with a degree in animal behavior....just a large Marine that did not think it was all about size dominance.. As for my home.. I have two rescue pets and one that we just got last week... I dont hit...I dont rub noses in poo....Trained or not... The word discipline means "to teach" and every time you discipline your dog, you are teaching it a little about trust and what is important. I do not chose to teach my family or pets that "whoever is the scariest wins". Just my two cents....

| Donating YT 14K Club Member | I may be out of line here but here goes...if I read correctly, Rae Rae has popped/spanked/whatever you want to call it, her dogs just a couple of times. While I don't think it's right to tell someone this is a correct training method, I do remember a couple of other members that have started threads about spanking their dogs and they had received completely different feedback from people. The way one thread was written, people actually laughed about it.

| You have to show them what they did wrong (stick their nose right up to it) and tell them no, or tap them. Like when my dog pushes his luck and goes into the garbage can after we tell him NO repeativly, of course were going to spank him. Just don't do it too hard. But you have nothing to feel bad about. But this is just my opinion, and while some might say it doesn't work, I have seen the results on my dogs and they have all been fine. Remember Im not talking about beating either, there is a huge difference between tapping a dogs behind w/ a paper and actaully beating it. Also I would like to add that smacking (not hard enough to hurt, but hard enough to startle) is OK to do in cases when the dog is ignoring it's commands, disobeying the owner when it knows better, or is trying to act like it is the master For all of our dogs, if they dis-obey and we spank them, they have never became fearful. It shows them who their owner is. Also, like I said, we have taken our dogs to training classes, so it's not like we DONT know how to raise dogs. Now that atleast one of you finally see that I am talking about discipline, NOT training, I don't need to sit here and say why I smack my dog, cuz frankly it's no ones business. I know I'm not a dog abuser, but you guys make it sound like it's soo wrong to hit a dog for ANY reason, These are all from Rae Rae's posts from this thread....And I am sorry, it doesn't sound like she just hit/smack/or whatever....just a couple of times. By the way it sounds, it sound like she uses this technique to DICSIPLINE quite often....

1. Will your attitude about disipline be the same once your yorkie has gone through the training period? Yorkies can be just as stubborn and not "obey". Will his punishment be the same? A smack or tapping it with a newspaper. 2. If your current dog is as mean and vicious as you say, then why would you want to bring an innocent small yorkie into the mix? If your dog would attack people, what would make you think he would not attack another dog. | |

I do remeber that one....I didn't say anyhting....I just don't agree with it. But this Rae Rae is basically trying to condone this action for discpline. I just find it very sad. Thats all. And I still can't believe that this is even allowed to still be going on as an open topic.
