hitting with newspaper??? my dog continues to "have accidents" at home, that are totally unexplained because wetake him out a lot and "when he wants to" he goes to the wee wee pad. in fact two days ago he did pee pee on the living room carpet so i finally spanked him with the newspaper (very soft) like everyone told me to at home, he was sad but came near me. didnt pee inside for two days. yesterday he peed inside 3 times! in places where he had never even gone before!!! so i spanked him once iwth the newspaper (i hate doing it but they say it works :( well he was reeally mad at me and sad. wouldnt come near me (duh) and after 20 minutes he came to me and licked my feet as of to apologize and then i realize, apologize for what? i am a monster!!! how can i hit my little baby!!!? specially after he going missing for two hours the day before. i am ashamed of myself and wont do it again, i hope he will forgive me. |
You are not a bad mommy, you were just ill advised. My dad did that with our very first dog and it made him mean. He started to fight back and would attack the paper. He actually bit the paper boy once. I read an article a long time ago that any spanking, even with a newspaper, is a no-no. It makes the dog think going potty is bad - period. Then what happens is they hold it cuz they think its a bad thing to do. That's probably why he went 3 times inside. He was scared to pee and couldn't hold it, then tried to hide it by going in a different spot. It would be much better if you make a huge deal and celebrate when he goes potty out side. Encourage him with treats and praise him like he just did the most incredible thing. It worked wonders with Jewel and she was a tough girl to potty train! Better to reinforce good behavior instead of the bad. Let us know what you decide to do and how it works out. I'm sure you are going to get bunch of advise. |

How old is your Yorkie? Let us know how the trainer goes! I agree with the discussion on praise, praise! These little dogs can take a while! You need a lot of patience and persistance! Please don't hit your dog or he will just be afraid of you. |
I think you realize what hitting will do to your yorkie - and while I don't agree with it - it really can turn a dog submissive and may make the problem with peeing worse.... GOOD LUCK with your trainer - it sounds like you made a good decision - and I totally agree with LOTS OF PRAISE - my Chanel is 4 now and still races to me for a kiss after she does her 'bidness' outside - it can take some yorkies a long time to 'get it' but when they do - they usually are pretty proud of themselves....So Yes - throw a parade when he goes where you want....:) time and patience and training will help way more than the newspaper. |
i would love to know what the trainer says...keep us informed... i need some advise too |

I don't think theres anything wrong w/ swatting the dog w/ the paper. We do it to our dogs when they do something that they know is wrong. As for pottying in the house though, I wouldn't do it. You have to show them what they did wrong (stick their nose right up to it) and tell them no, or tap them. Like when my dog pushes his luck and goes into the garbage can after we tell him NO repeativly, of course were going to spank him. Just don't do it too hard. But you have nothing to feel bad about. Edit: As for tapping their nose, I'm talking about when the dog is older and has been potty trained, and just goes in the house for no reason. Definitly not during potty training time though! |
