Default My Big Boy

My Tootie weighed in last week at 14 pounds! He is all Yorkie! His mom was 5 lbs and dad was a little over 4. He is such a joy! I was surprised at first but now, he is just TOO CUTE, I am glad to have a larger one. I have no plans to breed so that is not an issue to me...

i know I will catch flack for this from the breeders, but i truly think the right thing to do in this case is refund the buyers money. This yorkie probably was sold to her for a small yorkie. I know that no one can ever guarantee size and I also know traits can show up in pups from many generations back. Your dog should have never been breed nor the grandsire. I don't know what was paid to you for this yorkie and I know you didn't mean any harm and probably didn't even know. If I were the buyer, I would be very upset. I am not like most of the people on here in that I do not think all yorkies are beautiful or adorable. I have seen quite a few that I wouldn't be happy with but of course, that is simply a matter of opinion. I have also seen on here some larger yorkies that truly are adorable and beautiful. If it was an honest mistake on your part selling him to be small, the least you ought to do is refund all or part of the money even if she loves him to death and wants to keep him. Things like this could really hurt your breeding program. Good luck and hugs to both of you. This is an unfortunate situation for both of you.

so your saying that just because the pup isn't what the buyer wanted I should give back the money- are you serious. that was 6 months or so ago. And really like you jsut said I can't tell if the pup is going to be 3 or 13 lbs.

a dog to a dog lover is like there children. That is like adopting a child and saying well i wanted a smaller built child so ..... I am gonna give you back or they should give me my money back for taking you-

I dont' think this owner is concerned about the money - so this isn't directed to her- but that would be crazy to do. Cause you have no way of knowing. That is the draw back to breeding... people know that

My family has 2 big yorkies that are sisters but they look completely different. One is 10 lbs and one is 12 lbs, but one is blond with curly hair and the other is silver with straight hair. So, just because a purebred yorkie doesn't meet the standard, that doesn't mean that they are not 100% yorkie. Most yorkies don't meet the standard. However, I agree, I don't think you should breed him. But that doesn't make him any less of a yorkie. He is just precious!

Sugar's Mom, I agree, not all yorkies are cute, just like babies! I agree that her big yorkie should not have been bred. Tho I am not a breeder, I think those that do chose to produce yorkies should follow the standard, that is the least they can do. I also agree on refunding her some/all of her money.

I personally don't think you should have to refund money. There is no way to guarantee the size a dog will turn out to be. I am not a breeder, but every single breeder I have dealt with has had a disclosure in their contract that says that they will not refund money if a yorkie does not turn out to be the size and/or color that they buyer thought it was going to be. There is just no way to tell.

A good breeder knows what their lines are going to produce

Whether you should refund any or all of the money or not really depends on what the buyer was expecting. Did you advertise that the puppy would stay small? The buyer has a picture of the grandsire that she posted. Did the buyer see the parents and the grandsire before she bought the puppy? Unless you told her or guaranteed her that the puppy would stay small, then there is no reason, legally, that you should refund the money. I do see both sides of the issue, though. I definately think that all three dogs -- mother, father, grandsire -- are 100% yorkie, even though they don't all meet the standard.

Good luck getting the issue resolved!

I have seen some REALLY cute "over-sized" yorkies (here and elsewhere), and yes, sometimes they have their own strengths and positive features. It's always GREAT to see owners who love and appreciate them just as they are!

But I think that there are ENOUGH "large" yorkies out there, without irresponsibly breeding more. Rescues are full of yorkies that are gorgeous and healthy, but are given up just because they are "too big".

If you're going to breed, I definitely think that you should try to breed within the standard as closely as possible. There are ENOUGH poorly bred yorkies out there. "Full-blood" and "registered" mean next to nothing because of this.

I'll be the bad guy to go out on a limb and say that the dogs in these pics look like "terriers", sure...."yorkie mix", yeah maybe...but good examples of what a yorkies should look like? breeding material? no.

(and I don't even consider myself to be an "elitest" along these lines!~)

PS....having sd. all that....Raphie'sMom....Ralphie is a really cute guy!!! No, I probably wouldn't breed him, but...he is REALLY cute!

Well, i feel like most people who buy yorkies, are doing so because they are so small. Especially a first time Yorkie owner like myself. Lots of breeds around the 10-12lb size are cute (and much cheaper).I wanted a small furry dog like all the ones i have seen. Breeding standard is 7lbs or under. Ralphies mom and dad are both small and look like a regular yorkie, but his grandad is where he gets his funkyness from I think. So it was unexpected and his brothers are normal looking yorkies.
Tooties mom - Tootie looks alot like my Ralphie. will you post more pictures of him so can see him better?

I agree with Chachi's mom...our Chester is super duper long and is about 8lbs and we get super rude comments from people "oh my, he's so big" "he's so long" wow, is that a yorkie or silkie" "is he a purebred" "is he within standards" or people give him the look of disgust. We got him from a breder back when we didnn't know about breed standards, we got him because we thought he was a sweet dog. He has a beautiful face and the breder lied that he was healthy...on the other hand, the 2nd time around, we did it right after some research. Our other girl Zoe is within standards, small (shouldn't get bigger than 4-5 lbs) pretty as can be, has a nice square body and a nice thick coat. We love Chester and don't care about his size or body structure but I feel sorry that strangers always give Zoe all the attention and not him...sometimes we try to not take this personal...

Don't do the same thing that particular breeder does for the sake of the dog.

agree again...the breeder for our perfect Zoe told us her exact lineage...mom was 4.5 lbs, dad was 4lbs, they expect her to be around this weight BUT she did have someone in their lineage that was was much bigger and thus this gene can pop up anytime and they cannot promise this...plus she was the biggest of her litter. Pure honestly from the breeder
