| first dog show-- i'm confused Snickers was entered in his first dog show. I'm a beginner, but the breeder told me that our dog has potential and my son really wanted to do this....so I said fine. Anyway, we entered him in a very casual, outdoor show. He did junior handling and the breeder also took him into the regular ring. He was registered in junior puppy (6-9 months). The problem....he was the only boy! All other puppies were girls. The did award him a first. (but he was the only one). The breeder told me that they didn't have to give him a first. They could have awarded him nothing. Then at the last round for best of breed, he was up against another girl dog. They awarded him best of opposite. I guess my question is....did he really win these? or was it because he was the only boy. I know he gets no points, but I still don't understand. Did he get it by default or was it the judges choice. Anyone know? |

| Ok, I just went to the ACK website and if I understood it right. Your kiddo just won a point! He won the Puppy Class - Male Then the Best Male & Best Female of the breed goes to the Best of Breed "Only the best male (Winners Dog) and the best female (Winners Bitch) receive championship points. The Winners Dog and Winners Bitch then compete with the champions for the Best of Breed award. At the end of the Best of Breed Competition, three awards are usually given: Best of Breed - the dog judged as the best in its breed category. Best of Winners - the dog judged as the better of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. Best of Opposite Sex - the best dog that is the opposite sex to the Best of Breed winner." http://www.akc.org/events/conformation/beginners.cfm Can anyone tell us if Snickers won a point (or 2)?

| What color ribbons did Snickers get? Between the two of us I think we can figure it out - Maybe.... HELP! Ribbons Each dog that receives an award is given a ribbon by the judge. The color of the ribbon indicates the type of award the dog has won. Blue - awarded for first place in any regular class. Also awarded to the winner of each group competition, usually in the form of a "rosette". Red - awarded for second place in each class. Also awarded for second place in each group competition, usually in the form of a "rosette". Yellow - awarded for third place in each class. Also awarded for third place in each group competition, usually in the form of a "rosette". White - awarded for fourth place in each class. Also awarded for fourth place of each group competition, usually in the form of a "rosette". Purple - awarded to the winners of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch classes. Since these are the classes in which championship points are earned, these ribbons are highly coveted. Purple and White - awarded to the Reserve Winners; that is, the runners-up to the winner of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch classes. Blue and White - awarded to the dog that wins Best of Winners; that is, the better of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch winners. Purple and Gold - awarded to the dog judged "Best of Breed" in each breed competition. This is highly coveted because it allows advancement to the Group competition. Red and White - awarded to the Best of Opposite Sex. This means the best dog of the breed that is the opposite sex of the Best of Breed winner. Red, White and Blue - only one of these is awarded, at the end of each show. It is given to the ultimate award winner, the Best In Show.

| Confusing to me -- But - as far as entering even if there is no competition - it is still a good experience for all of you - your son and your dog....and this experience should be helpful to both of them when they enter other shows. Good luck - Carol Jean |

| Okay - he has no points for best male puppy, since no dogs went against him - but he had to go back again to go against the best female. He got reserve for this - which means the girl that went against him gets the points. Reserve is like getting second. So you are right no points are awarded to him, but you are also right and the breeder is right - the judge did not have to award him fist place for his class. This same thing happen to my Pepe when he showed in Atlanta. No boy competition. But this is great practice - for you and your baby. Best of luck in future shows! P.S. You have to have a certain amount of dogs to compete against to get your majors. Check the show catalog and it will show how many pints based on how many dogs showed - absent members do not count. | points I do not know how it works in Canada..the point system is quite different..but in the US, the judge can award the BOS points from the BOB...I had a male take the bitches points for a major...it gets confusing, I still do not understand how my male got a major when there were not enough males for a major..but the judge said he could take the bitches major????...but one thing is for sure..the judge does not have to give a ribbon..infact I saw a single male entry get a second place ribbon...judge said the dog was not show quality and did not want to see it come back to compete for winners dog..."ain't that a slap in the face"..? but the judge was right... |

| Thanks everyone...and you are right...we had a blast! My son didn't care...he got the ribbons! I don't really care in the long run! I just want to neuter him and be done with it! But the breeder begged me not too. She's regretting selling him. Too me....he's just a pet. I don't have enough energy to keep the coat beautiful! I'll give it some time! |

| Wow... Showing dogs is really confusing... But it's so fun to see the the georgeous animals! I was just really surprised how small the larger breeds are getting. The Akita's, Chow's and Bouvier's were all so small! And most of the Yorkies I saw were super thin and leggy.

| From what I have heard - Many (not all) of the top breeders were breeding for higher leg length since they show better - can be seen better in the ring. They are trying for a more elegant dog. Just what I heard. So your observations are right. I have noticed that too. But at the Atlanta show - I surprise to see them smaller. T. |

| He needs to beat another dog to gain points... it takes two dogs in the ring to make one point... and best of opposite... mean he beat all the males.. but the female was better....... girls rule and boys drool......... it is not an easy system to figure out.... you will need to read a book.. especially for coat care... |
