Default first dog show-- i'm confused

Snickers was entered in his first dog show. I'm a beginner, but the breeder told me that our dog has potential and my son really wanted to do this....so I said fine. Anyway, we entered him in a very casual, outdoor show. He did junior handling and the breeder also took him into the regular ring. He was registered in junior puppy (6-9 months).

The problem....he was the only boy! All other puppies were girls. The did award him a first. (but he was the only one). The breeder told me that they didn't have to give him a first. They could have awarded him nothing. Then at the last round for best of breed, he was up against another girl dog. They awarded him best of opposite.

I guess my question is....did he really win these? or was it because he was the only boy. I know he gets no points, but I still don't understand. Did he get it by default or was it the judges choice. Anyone know?
