| Grooming and brushing I am sure all of you know that grooming or brushing our yorkies is a pain in the neck. Our Remi lets us brush him once a day, but sometimes he is a lttle grumpy and goes out of control, making it difficult to brush him well. Grooming him takes a least 1.5 hours and two people. Mostly trying to hold him in one place. Is this normal? How do other dogs behave at the groomers? He is fine when taking a bath, a little nervous, but more or less fine. |

Jazzie loves to be brushed and groomed. She will sit or stand or lay just the way I need her to and she sometimes falls asleep when I'm blow drying her. On the other hand Jewel would squirm and fight me everytime I tried to brush her from the day I brought her home. I think her skin might have been more sensitive (l mean like ticklish) and she just couldn't sit still. She will only tolerate the top of her head being brushed. So what did I do??? I played mama dog and roll her on her back and growl with my mouth against her throat. That keeps her in check for about a minute. I also kept a pair of scissors handy to clip away the small tangles. Figured it wasn't worth her discomfort to try to work it out. I usually would start brushing her when she was super tired and about to fall asleep...

| That's alot of Effort? It usually doesn't take that long to brush them or that much effort? My male Artie is 2 1/2 yrs. old and my female Abigail is 1 1/2 yrs. old. Artie has a full coat year round since my ex-boyfriend got mad @ me when he was a puppy and shaved all his hair off. Since then I vowed that he would look like a real Yorkie, topnot bow and all. He must be brushed at least twice a day or his coat will matt! Abi on the other hand can get away with only once a day. (Artie loves it and Abi tolerates it). Everyday they go through a grooming routine.....right before their morning walk, I brush them, wipe their eyes with a wash cloth, brush their teeth and put their hair in a french braid or ponytail/topnot. Both of them take about 20 minutes, 10 minutes for each. With Artie I give a special command, one word in Japanese, it's different from any english command so he mentally associates this word with brushing only. Besides they know they have to do this before they can go on their walk. I do also dress them according to the weather or occasion? That also includes the matching bows on both of them, even my male! I'm sure of one thing, in all endeavors especially Grooming, I do everything from clipping their nails, tipping/shaving their ears, trimming the hair around their paws and in between their toes, Sanitary shave (a polite way of saying to shave their private parts) even expressing their anal glands! (Now that's Love?) You Must remain calm and relaxed so they will be! So they can associate the action as a relaxing experience. Think of "Spa Day"? |

| My goodness, I can bath, dry, oil, and wrap a full coated dog in that time. Something is wrong either in the tools your using or by being to nice or giving in at his complaints. I remember many years ago getting one of those pin brushes with the little balls on the ends, how horible for the dog and a waste of money. I also remember not knowing the proper use of a slicker brush, when to use it or how to correctly. I've been showing dogs for years, Yorkies, and I also use to groom dogs professionally. Maybe if I know more I can give you a couple suggestions.

| I'm not sure what you want to know. I won't be hanging around this board long, we sell Show Supplies and Pet Products, plus I have my dogs and puppies to care for too. So my time is really short.

| Chachi and Jewels both do good at the groomers but Jewels goes every month and Chachi goes every two months.

| As far as Brushes and Combs go, I only use and sell All System Brushes. The bad thing about these brushes are that they don't last for years, but they are the most gently one skin that I have found. I would bet that 95% of the Yorkie Show Exhibitors use this brand. The comb I like is the Fine/Med Teflon for the body, and I never use a full size for the face. If you have a fine silk coat the Boars Bristle works well, the one with a nylon center with help the bristles to go through the coat better. Usually a slicker isn't used, but the "Softer Cotton Textured Coats" can be more than what I would want to maintain daily, and a slicker can be the only thing that with work on the mats they get. Puppies can use go through a coat change where a slicker comes in handy too, usually around 4 - 6 months old. The only slicker to use is the X-Sm Extra Soft and you never hit the skin with it, people have actually burn the skin on dogs with these not using them properly. To be more gentle I'll pinch the base, next to skin, of the coat between my fingers to hold the coat when I use it. This coat change that causes the tangles last for a couple of months, and the usually trouble ares is the stifle (Knee) area and under the front legs. I'm sure many of you have been on our site.

| Gosh sorry for the typos in last posting! Red98, Oil/Conditioner? Are you asking what can be use for general brushing. If you have Pets your not going to want to Oil a coat. Oil collects dirt and you'll need to bath all the time. I show Yorkies and use Oil when I wrap a coat up in Papers, not for dogs that are not being shown. The same goes for conditioners, used to heavy they will add to much weight to the coat, they don't appear clean even after a bath, and will cause static. Static not only looks funny it collects dirt and will cause additional breakage on the ends.
