| Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have had 4 Yorkies throughout my life. My first Karma weighed 18 lbs and had floppy ears never grew coat, I loved him. Second one Zorro was 7 lbs not a very healthy dog but lived to almost 13, loved him. 3 rd one Gracie was 5-6 lbs and died at 6 1/2, loved her. After Gracie died my husband and dtr wanted a Pom so thye got one from a pet store, I was still mourning Gracie and said do whatever. Maya was suppossed to weugh 4-7 lbs weighs 12 1/2, love her. When I went to get Cali I just liked the conversation I had with the breeder and we went to see her, fell in love she was tiny but so were all of my dogs at that age. So I llove all my dogs regardless of size but I did want one to be within the standard, had she gotten bigger no problem but I did prefer she would stay within standard just my preference. I hope everyone feels like they can come here and ask questions no matter if some may think they have been answered before or are sick of reading them. That's what makes this such a great forum. I for one have had dogs my whole life and 4 Yorkies and I have learned more in my 9 months on YT then I ever did in all my 53 years. This is a learning experience for most people on here and a platform to educate about the breed. JMO

| my yorkies are all different sizes and colours, and i love them all the same. yorkies use to be much bigger and didnt have so many health problems, the little ones use to be called the runts of the litter and no one wanted them but then things changed and everyone wanted smaller yorkies so they were bred down in size without even thinking about what health problems the tiny ones would have, its all about money and the little ones get you more thats all the bad breeders cared about. its very sad

| Obviously everyone here will agree that it is absolutely insane for someone to give a yorkie meds for it to stay small, and it is insane for someone to sacrifice health for size and charge $10,000 for them. Other than that, different strokes for different folks...some people really don't care what size their yorkie will be (they chose based on personality, color, they really like the breeder, etc.) and some people just prefer smaller yorkies (for various reasons, maybe the owner's health, maybe lifestyle, and really don't care what its personality or color will be) and are willing to pay big bucks for one. I am not ashamed to admit that after having large yorkies all my life (12 pounds and 15 pounds) that I wanted one that was smaller, and I was willing to pay more to get one. Hobbs will probably only be 3 lbs full grown and he is the perfect size for us at this stage in our life. AND we are getting another yorkie in July from his same parents...which will probably be 3-4 lbs full grown. But these are extremely healthy yorkies, and obviously I am NOT willing to sacrifice health for size. I don't know anyone anywhere that would want an unhealthy small yorkie instead of a healthy big yorkie. Granted, there are first time yorkie owners out there who don't do their research and end up with unhealthy small yorkies. But, is there really anything we can do about that?? If someone is buying a $10,000 unhealthy tiny yorkie, they obviously aren't members of YorkieTalk. These people may come to YT seeking our help while they are coping with their bad decision. I think that we should be kind and be there for them instead of bashing them. Everyone makes mistakes. Unless someone is trying to intentionally harm their yorkie for it to stay small, or is breeding unhealthy yorkies so they will stay small, is this really something we need to be getting worked up over?? I think we all should just play nice and agree to disagree. |

I agree... people should not be worried about the weight... I wonder If there is a way to permantly post the weight chart so if anyone EVER needs to get a estimated adult weight they can look this up.....http://yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm... why doesn't anyone use the handy tools admin posted for us(i.e search button?)?????? | |

BUT, I feel we don't have to agree, disagree, agree to disagree, or even get along. This forum is just about stating our opinions. What I don't like is when I say my "apologies" for pre-offending anyone, and then people get so strong in their beliefs they they try to hurt other people on here and/or say nasty things. I will never intentionally start crap with any member, but I will defend my thoughts...which I guess I shouldn't have to.

| I think this is a good thread, and I agree. I wish people would stop being obseesed that they don't want their baby being over a certain weight. As long as its happy and healthy....that is what should matter! But I do have a gripe. People NEED to do their research!!!!!!! If you want a dog to be in the standard, then you really need to find a reputable breeder. There are sooo many unethical breeders out there who are breeding anything to anything just to make a buck. And I think there need to be MORE ethical breeders out there, but unfortunatly, there aren't. ANd we need to quit buying from pet stores. Who knows what you are really getting. Finding a reputable breeder will give you pedigrees of the parents, give you refernces, and will show you the parnets! I think you can get an idea of what the puppy you are thinking about purchasing will look like and how big it will get. If you aren't liking what you are seeing, then don't buy the puppy. Sooo many times we jump into buying hte 1st puppy we see, and aren't willing to wait for what we really want! So I guess what I am trying to say is that WE need to take responsiblility people! Do your homework! Find an ethical breeder! There are lots of wonderful breeders out there, many of whom are here on YT!!!!!! Do not buy from a petstore, or from anyone who always has puppies listed in the paper. FInd a great breeder, get to know them, get to know their breeding dogs. Get to know their refernences and get to know their vet!!!!! Its very simple! If you do your homewrok, chances are the breeder won't tell you that this puppy will be 4 lbs and end up 12 lbs! Boy do I wish I knew about YT before I got my 1st yorkie!!!!!!!!! Sorry, had to vent too!!!!

Now, I think it's VERY WRONG for anyone to force their dog to stop growing by giving them meds. That's just sick. But I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting a smaller sized Yorkie, as long as it's healthy and NOT bred from an extremely tiny female. I think it's wrong to breed 2 lb or 3 lb females to intentionally get tiny pups. I feel sorry for those poor tiny Yorkie mamas. It is possible for a standard size female to occasionally produce a tiny pup.

| I think a lot of new members are first time yorkie owners and don't realize that the difference between a 5lb dog and a 7lb dog is really not that noticeably. Especially under a lot of hair! I have seen 9lbers that to me looked like maybe they were no more than 6lbs- I have seen 6lbers that I would have swore weighted 9! Plus, when they went to pick out their "new baby" maybe the breeder put so much emphasis on size (this one won't get any bigger than 3lbs, this other one will be LARGER at around 4.5lbs... whatever!) New owners just don't know what to expect. Many breeders I think put this thought into their heads- I think a lot of times it's the breeder who places so much bearing on the puppies estimated adult weight. Then new owners come here looking for confirmation to what the breeder may have told them. When I got my first yorkie I didn't know this forum existed. As a result, I didn't even realize how tini-tiny my girl was or all the risks she was at due to her size. I do know that I was always a nervous wreck where she was concerned for fear of stepping on her or kicking her across the floor or worse! My breeder never described her as "teacup", she simply told me that the puppies out of this litter had been smaller in size than previous litters. She showed me the mom and dad, told me their weights so that I could get an understanding of what size she would probably end up being. I think when newbies come on here asking questions about estimated weight, they just don't know that it really isn't a big deal to anyone who's not a breeder. |
