It's not that they removed three and left one only, one will have grown. A vet told me that they can have any number between one and four. Ah isn't nature a marvellous thing.

Hi. I'm new to this site. So, if I'm entering my question in the wrong place, please forgive me. I am purchasing a new female Yorkie. She still has her dew claws and hasn't had her tail docked yet. Do you know the cost of having these procedures done?

Gracie had one dew claw that some how they missed when she was a baby. I had it removed when she was spayed. They usually are not as tightly attached as a toe would be. She had no problem with the removal.

It is hard to clip those little claws and they sometimes do get them caught on things. It can be very painful for them to get a dew claw caught on something. As they pull to try to get away it can rip the skin and cause injury.

If you want it removed maybe consider having it done when she is spayed. Gracie's healed very well and there was not even a mark on her foot where it was removed.

I would forget about the tail. The time has passed to have that done. They usually do that when the pups are 3 or 4 days old, way before any real cartridge forms.
Her bones are forming now and the tail is bone not mushy tissue like when they are first born. It would be major surgery to have the tail docked now. There are lots of Yorkies her at YT that have tails. I wouldn't worry about it. I think the tails are beautiful.

Gina still has her front ones, we didn't discover them untill about 3 weeks after we got her. I plan on getting them removed when she gets spayed, until then she gets them trimmed every 2 weeks with the rest of her nails.

Totally agree. I'd probably have kept Mandie's if I could. I do understand getting a Yorkie and wanting the "look" but what's done is done (or not done).

She'll be gorgeous and the envy of a lot of ones here

Barney had his dew claws when we brought him home at 11 weeks. I had them removed when he was 5 months old at the same time he was neutered. It was painful for him and it took a few weeks for him to completely heal. On a positive note, he didn't even notice that he was minus two balls because he was focused on his bandaged feet. Now, that it's over I am so glad we went ahead and did it. I just knew he was going to tear one off as they would get hung up rather easily. I would recommend doing this at a time when you are going to be home for vacation so that you can give your pup constant attention. The bandages have to be removed after a few days and the feet have to be kept completely dry. This is not easy when they go out to pee in the mornings.

I've read that it's very painful to remove dew claw unless they are done the first few days of life. Katie has her front dew claws. Her breeder purposely left them intact because she works with her dogs in performance sports, and they have a purpose. I make sure I cut them, and even though Katie is very active, we have had no problem with them. Once I read the article below, I became happy that Katie has her dew claws.

At this point, docking the tail would be an amputation, and it would be very painful for your baby, as well.
