Are dew claws bad???  My new little girl still has her dew claws at age 15 weeks, should I have those removed or are they ok. I can't get to them when I'm cutting her nails and I can tell that they are getting long.  |
If you get her dew claws removed now...... it will hurt her very much. We tail dock and dew claw remove when they are only a day or two old because their nerves are not fully developed and will recover very fast. Dew claws are not bad unless you neglect them. It is possible it gets caught on stuff so you just have to be careful. If the nail is too long and you can't cut it with a dog trimmer, use a human nail clipper where you can cut from the side. My older boy yorkie never got his removed either so I keep a very close eye on it. Always trim it and she'll be fine. |

You have the front 4 nails. The dew claw will be on the inside of the paw but up higher like close the the "ankle". If you do not keep the claw short, it can get caught on things and get ripped out or torn. Also, the nail can actually grow long enought and curl back into the skin. |

I always make sure that when I get a puppy that his/her dew claws are removed. They are just a pain to deal with and your dog does not need them. This is a true story... I use to work at a dog grooming salon. The owner came in with the dog whose dew claw she never cut. As a result the dew claw curled and grew into the pad. So before we could even cut the nail we had to pull it out of the pad and cut the nail immediately. Lots of blood, not only was there blood from having the nail pulled out of the pad but there was also blood when cutting the nail because the quick grew to the end of the nail because it was not cut. So always always make sure that if your pup does have dew claws that you keep them short, they tend to grow the fastest and curl in. :animal-pa |
Hobbs still has his dew claws, too. He chews on them so they have stayed short. Is it bad that he chews on them?! |
Toe part but no nail? Simon and Nigel have the toe/skin part but no nail. does that need that they don't have their dew claws? |
OH NO!!! Bella has one DEW CLAW!!! I never knew where they were. I thought they were on the underside/back of the paw. I wonder why they took out one, and not the other?!? :( |
You could get them removed when you have her spayed. |
Ummm... are these on the front paws only??? |
I would recommend getting them removed when the dog is fixed. My friend\'s boxer had hers torn off by accident. IMO that happening is more painful for the dog because you can\'t give her pain meds on the way to the vet. |
My mom had Rocky\'s removed when he got neutered. He had to wear a cone around his neck for about a week to keep him from chewing. He was fine other then that. He was actually kinda comical with that thing on. He didn\'t seem to mind it when he ate, it covered the whole bowl and he didn\'t have to share. :D |
I knew nothing about dew claws and had a young dog that was constantly licking her front leg. And, it was so sore, she wouldn\'t let me near it. But I did check it out and her nail had grown around in a circle and right back into her leg, and she had a very sore infected area that must have hurt her a lot. I took her to the vet, and he removed her dew claws. She was probably about 6 months old then and recovered quickly. I can promise you that she was much more comfortable when she came home from the vet after her surgery than she was before her surgery. My vet said hers needed to be removed because of the way they were growing. He said she would constantly have problems with them, and it would just be best to remove them...... which we did, and, of course, we had no further problems. Good luck - Carol Jean |
