Big Scare and word of caution!!

I couldn't save my little Kramer from another big dog even though I just had him on a regular 6 ft leash. It just happened so fast that I only had him lifted half way up when the big dog grabbed him.

Please keep those babies close.

Just thought I'd update this one since it was bumped back up.

The retractable leash is outta here. Kirby just totally freaks out when it is dragging behind him, even if I just lay it down (indoors of course) to try to get him used to it. I lay it down and he moves away a little and it moves too and he takes off running cause he thinks its chasing him or something. He doesn't mind it when we are walking and I'm holding it but I can't take the chance of dropping it again so it went into the drawer and I got a 6' standard leash and I actually like it better, I feel like I can 'yank' him out of harms way better if needed.

tpaxton- sorry to hear about that- that is very sad to hear, I hope your little one is okay, you didnt say if Kramer was killed or how bad his injuries were, I hope it's not serious. That is certainly a fear that we all share I'm sure.

I just wanted to let you know that I had to have Kramer put to sleep after the attack. Even though the big dog only bit him once, it was hard enough to sever his spinal column and he was permanently paralyzed. He was unable to breath on his own and was in a lot of pain so we had no choice but to have him put to sleep. I was devastated. This happened right in my own neighborhood a block from my house. I have a new yorkie puppy because my chihuahua, Maddie, and I were so lonely without Kramer.

I'm glad that you like your new leash. I think that it will give you more control over your little guy.

Scary I don't want to detract from your post at all, but the same thing happened to Stewie and me about 2 months ago. He ran right into the busy street I live on. Luckily no one was driving past or he would have definitely been roadkill. I didnt even think to let him wear it around the house afterward. He doesn't seem afraid of it, but I bet if I drop in on the cement again behind him, he would take off.

I'm glad to hear that Kirby and you are both OK. I don't like retractible leashes at all. I don't like the fact that they can get so far away. I just use regular leashes and harnesses on my two.

I am sorry about your scary experience with Kirby, and I am glad you are both safe and sound I wanted to say that I too don't use a retractable leash for Georgie. I like Georgie to be really close to me in case another dog comes close I can scoop him up quick. I have dropped his leash before when he gets tangled up in it and he never even knows I did. I might be a little paranoid but I believe he has about a 3 foot of leash(if that) and he doesn't seem to mind at all.

I am a little late on my post above, but I think the regular leashes are the best way to go.
