I don't want to detract from your post at all, but the same thing happened to Stewie and me about 2 months ago. He ran right into the busy street I live on. Luckily no one was driving past or he would have definitely been roadkill. I didnt even think to let him wear it around the house afterward. He doesn't seem afraid of it, but I bet if I drop in on the cement again behind him, he would take off.
