| Unsupervised puppy with bully stick? Our puppy loves his bully sticks. Is it OK to leave him alone for several hours with one? I wondered if it was safe. He seems to like it more than any of his other chew toys. He seems to be frustrated being home alone in his x-pen, tearing at his pee pee pad, and I thought he might be able to let go of some energy if he had something he really loved to chew--but I don't want to take any chances that he might choke or swallow a big piece. | I would be a little scared to leave him alone with it. Is there something else he might like that he couldn't chew pieces off of? I know it's hard to leave them with nothing How far is Slingerlands from Albany? You could leave him with me hehe I'll entertain him! |

| I would be afraid to leave mine alone with any chew toy where a pup could chew off a piece and choke. Any natural treats will soften after a lot of chewing and a pup could possibly get a piece of that lodged in his throat. Try the small size hard Nylabone instead. Oscar loves his and will chew and chew on it. I would trust leaving him home alone with the hard Nylabone - it is the white one. If they chew anything off of this bone it is a tiny speck and won't choke them.

| He has all the usual suspects, but it's the bully stick that he loves the most. Do you have any ideas? Last edited by Madison Avenue; 04-20-2006 at 01:57 PM. Reason: grammar |

| I do leave my Yorkies with bully sticks unattended, but until recently I was doing the same with Greenies and have never had any problems. From my observation they actually chew the bully sticks and never bite off a piece that they could choke on. The greenies did disappear a lot quicker so i am sure they probably were swallowing chunks. Mine are all 4 pounds or less and I give them the bully sticks that are about 7" long, 1" wide, 1/2" thick and I throw them away when they are less than 3". Although choking could be a problem, I think a puppy with nothing to do is worse. |

| I leave my puppy with pork twists-like bully sticks. I make sure i throw them away when she has softened the ends a lot. They are cheap,so I don't mind that we go through 3or 4 a week. She doesn't eat them-just chews!

| I have these rawhide stick-shaped things - that get soft after a lot of chewing. I doubt my pup would be able to get much off of these after only a few hours of chewing. However, he (and my other dog) certainly do enough chewing on them to get one or both ends very soft. When they reach this stage, I just take the scissors and cut the soft ends off and throw them in the garbage. Then, they have to start all over again. **** Also, if my dog were left alone with one of these for several hours - he might chew them for quite a while -- but he wouldn't chew them the whole time. (And - I know for a fact that he plays with his other toys and sleeps a lot of the time I'm gone....) Carol Jean |

| Am I a bad mom??? I leave their Bully Braids, Sticks, and Pretzels in with them when I am gone.. They don't chew them non stop like some dogs do... I think its cause they have like 8 of them on the floor at a time.. They are everywhere... My kitchen is littered with Bull Hoo-Hoo's. And I have a drawer in the kitchen that if full of them... If I had only known what they were when I bought them.... I might not have chosen to store them in my kitchen drawer! Me when company is over! "A spoon you say?? right over there in that drawer... no no, those are the bull Penises.. the other drawer... " Its the only chew thing they have down when I'm gone... I really don't worry about them.. If they were larger pups and chewed bigger soft spots, maybe I would have cause for concern... but it just looks very safe to me at the slow rate they chew...

| What about leaving your pup a frozen kong? I leave Nikko kongs stuffed with treats or frozen with peanut butter or yogurt. He loves this and doesn't even notice when I leave. Plus these are a lot safer than most chew toys. But I agree with Snow Wa. I think dogs sleep most of the day, especially when left alone. I know lots of times when i come home, Nikko has his just woke up from a nap sleepy face on.

| Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I will find some very big bully sticks at the pet store and leave one in the x-pen on Saturday or Sunday to see what happens. Because I am in and out on the weekends, I will be better able to monitor the puppy's activity. Ironically, our breeder recommended a stick chew made from a pig that comes in a $10 package at Walmart--there must be twenty sticks in the package. She felt they were perfectly safe and could be left in the x-pen--in fact she leaves one with the puppy she held back from our puppy's litter. And so last night I gave one to each of our dogs. The puppy, who is 17 weeks old, managed to break off a piece and was chomping away on the little piece when I noticed and wrestled it away. What I like about the bully stick is that pieces don't seem to break off. |
