I have these rawhide stick-shaped things - that get soft after a lot of chewing. I doubt my pup would be able to get much off of these after only a few hours of chewing. However, he (and my other dog) certainly do enough chewing on them to get one or both ends very soft. When they reach this stage, I just take the scissors and cut the soft ends off and throw them in the garbage. Then, they have to start all over again.
**** Also, if my dog were left alone with one of these for several hours - he might chew them for quite a while -- but he wouldn't chew them the whole time. (And - I know for a fact that he plays with his other toys and sleeps a lot of the time I'm gone....)
