Cry I thought she was housebroken

My Mia is 12 weeks old and sh'e my first Yorkie. She is sooo beautiful and alot of fun. I've had her almost 3 weeks now and up until 2 days ago whenever I bring her outside she'd pee and poop and I make a big deal out of it and give her a treat. About 2 days ago I will bring her out and she can stay outside for around 1/2 hr and not do anything. When I bring her in, after a couple of minutes you see her squatting. I tell her NO and bring her back outside and she still won't go but she'll look for that treat. The only time she'll go pee and poop is first thing in the morning and that's it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any ideas for me??? Thanks.

No advice. We're going through the exact same thing with London now who's 4 1/2 months.

Ok...here is my lastest attempt. Ramsey loves, loves those treats. If she goes outside, it is a potty party...complete with a treat. Any where else NO treat. She is catching on....treats....potty outside

Which sounds like your strategy ....keep doing it. Sometimes I think they must wonder....what was I supposed to do again???

She's still young. Not much you can do except what you are doing. They do eventually get the message. You ight want to try to figure out if there is a particular time of day that she poops and then keep an eye on her, so when she starts the sniffing around you can get her outside.

Also some say that if you don't free feed, and you feed at a certain time, they will poop on schedule also. I've never tried this, but it does make sense. So you might want to try that.

You are in good company, there are more potty training threads on here than anything else.

Welcome to YT,
Good luck.

I agree that you are doing everything right. Like others were saying, she is still SO young. You are lucky that she is doing this well at such a young age. What do you do with her during the day? Do you stay at home all day? We took Hobbs out every 2 hours until he was potty trained. Now he runs to the door when he has to go outside. If you stay at home with her all day, I would not wait for her to "tell" you she has to go out. She is still too young to tell you. I would take her out every 2 hours. When she goes outside, praise praise praise. When she goes inside, scold her and take her back outside. I honestly believe that they need to go potty inside and be scolded and get their feelings hurt a good number of times before they realize they are supposed to go outside. Try to catch her in the act of going potty inside. When you catch her in the middle of it, clap your hands really loudly and yell NO!!!! Then pick her up and take her outside. If she finishes up outside, praise her and give her treats! Make sure you take the treat outside with you to give her right after she goes potty out there. If you wait until she comes inside, she will have probably forgotten what she is getting the treat for. Good luck!! She seems like a smart little girl. I am sure she will get the hang of it soon.

Default pup

I have bever known anyone who had a trained 12 week old..it may happen, but not in my house. For some reason Yorkies have a terrible time getting the hang of house training. Kate, at 10 months is really well trained to indoor pads..and I think Emee will learn from her..right now at 4 months she is peeing on the pad only 1 out of 4 times..but near it 3 out of 4 times..the 4th time is ususally anywhere the mood strikes her. I gave up and got rid of all carpets..no longer have the will to fight with them..they win!!

have you ever tried to use the wee pads...my yorkie does not ever go outside because i am to scared to let him out...when we borught him home he was 8 weeks and he has always went to the pads...the first time he ever used it when we brought him home was on his pad and he has done it ever sicne then...i still give him lots of praise and treats everytime and i think that has helped because when he pees on the pads if i act like i dont see him he will turn around and stiff where he went and then look up at me like he is trying to say "mom i peed on the pad now where is my treat" and he will stand on his pad until i do see it and give him a treat even if i am out of the room he stands there until i come back to see what he has done and he is only 12 weeks also...i would say try the pee pads because they can go more freely when they want to and have a tendcy to go back to them more than waiting to go outside they are still to little to hold thier pee and poo so the pads give them that freedom to go when they have to go and still be able to do what they are spose to do to please you so they can get that treat...good luck in what ever you decide to do

I agree with YorkieRose that it's very rare at 12 weeks to have a trained yorkie. A dog trainer told me once that puppies do not have muscle control until they are 6 months old. It sounds like you are doing everything right. The one thing that worked for us was taking our pups out every hour. Most times they would go, but there were still accidents in the house. But lo and behold, when they reached 6 mos., there were fewer accidents and eventually they were housebroken.

I wouldn't expect too much at this stage. You've got a few more months to go!

Cry Potty mistakes!

Good Luck! I agree with everyone......I have a 1 yr. old female and she still has mistakes in the house peeing. My Boyfriend is very frustrated, he used to Breed Boxers and can't understand what her problem is? It's the root of all our arguements. I can't give any advice except "Consistency"!!!! My male on the other hand was house trained in 2 days @ 20 weeks old and never had a mistake/accident since? I do have a girlfriend with a 5 yr. old Yorkie female that is still not house trained! And another girlfriend with 9 female Pomeranian's and none of them are house trained, imagine cleaning that?!

9...and not housetrained...I would definately get rid off all carpet. I did not bring Chance home until he was 12 weeks but it only took about 2 weeks and he got the hang of things. He still has accidents but not everyday. Mostly when it is raining outside...he does not like the rain. But we used the bell on the door and he does really well. You can tell when he really has to go cause he rings the bell hard. When he just wants to go outside and goof off he barley hits the bell. Its funny.

The bell is a great idea! Do you hang it on the door somehow, or is it on the floor? I might give that a try.

not to make your day worse but sometimes it is impossible to house break a yorkie I had one for 4 years and I tryed everything finally when I got prego with my first child my husband said he had to go and so we got rid of him, and recarpeted the ENTIRE house. We have moved since into a much larger home and are expecting our second child, I have a 7 mth old yorkie now and I got lucky she has been potty trained since almost the first week, she only had one accident in the house, we also have a 5 1/2 yr old great dane so I think she helped train her, she whines at the door when she wants out and we have been so surprised. I am also a stay at home moma nd my husband owns his own internet company so he works here in the hosue so we are always around and i think that helped alot. I hope your dear baby potty trains soon, I am a CLEAN FREAK and can understand how frustrating it can be!

You definately need to pick a potty training method and stick to it. Do not go back and forth from wee wee pads to outside to bell. This will be very confusing for the puppy!!!! Pick a method and be extremely consistent about punishment and praise. I know they are small and cute and sweet and it is hard sometimes to punish them, but if the dog goes to the bathroom in the house and is not punished, then she will NEVER be trained!!!!!!! Even though you will spend a lot of time outside with her at first, if you are able, you need to take her outside every 2 hours. I promise you it will pay off in the long run. And really scold her when she goes potty inside....don't spank, but be very firm. Yorkies are so stubborn and you have to get across to them that YOU are the boss, not them. The only way to do that is to be consistent and firm with them. Good luck!!!! I am sure she will get the hang of it soon.

Default Don't feel bad!

My girls are 61/2 and 41/2 months old.......

I just moved into a new house.... White carpet!
(can you see where this is GOING!)

Pixie was totally in super potty training mode! Doing awesome! 99% there! the 1% was when mommy missed her "Pee-Pee Dance" and she could not wait! So we are in the new place... Paris joins the gang.... She picks right up... All is well! I am loving life! They are trained... I give them run of 80% of the house... The living room, den, halls, kitchen and my room at night....

STUPID ME!

I totally deserved what came next!

i started noticing spots around the house... Little yellow spots... Yikes! I was now spot cleaning the carpet! Ok... no big deal... I can stay on top of it! But then it got a little out of hand... I got bust, I missed a couple of day of spot cleaning... The spots started adding up... It really started becoming obvious to not only me, but to my husband! my girls were not potty trained at all!

Why was I letting a 6 and 4 month old puppy have run in my house??? Cause I was STUPID! and I totally deserved every pee spot I ended up with!

There is no way in heck that two puppies that age have any idea what they are doing in this BIG house! Even with the doggie door, and yes they even know how to use it! Anyone who thinks that their puppy is some mutant genius dog that was born with the knowledge of "How to Potty Train Your Dog for Dummies" already implanted in their apricot sized brains, needs a serious reality check. I got that reality check, in the form of a $225.00 carpet cleaning bill, and 3 $39.95 baby gates from petsmart.

Now my girls are blocked off at two doors and have the kitchen and breakfast nook area, which is all hard wood floors, to play in all day!. And at night I have another gate on my bathroom door right off my bedroom. If they stand at the gate, they can watch me sleep!

I am pleased to report that they are almost accident free and have adjusted well to the confinement... It took a week of whining and barking, but they are over it and doing fine!

We go outside every hour on the hour! And spend 20 minutes in the sun and grass! they love it!! and in the cooler parts of the after noon, they spend an hour outside playing and running and just hanging out!

Its nice to get up at 6 am and find no potty in the bathroom... I snatch them up and run outside and they go right away! Pee and poop! Then we run inside to the kitchen and get treats! then its back to the bathroom so mommy can get some more sleep! he he he They just nap and chew.

Sorry for the long post! But Its been such a fight and I feel like I am winning now!!! I just had to share!
