| Boys vs. girls...... and why? Hello everybody.... my favorite forum to visit! OK... before I ask.... I just want to state this is suppose be a very FRIENDLY thread and I thought it could be fun as well! This is ONLY each's opinion and I really want to know. I have MY own personal favorite but I wanted to know yours. I are not trying to change people's mind about what they prefer... I am just curious! I am a hobby breeder and I have both boys and girls! Please don't get upset anyone if you have an opposite opinion and in NO way am I referring to your dog! I understand each dog is an individual and might not apply........I just want to be very clear on that before I begin! LOL This is only my opinion! And just so you know..... I love ALL my furbabies and each of them are spoiled rotten. If I get a new fancy coller... all of them get it! I don't make them share.... (i was a second child and I hated my sister's hand me downs!) I've always loved girls...... They are sweet but not needy They are smart and learn quickly never mark are not yippy they seem stronger in personality I can doll them up dress them up Bad traits of my girls are.... they are very dominant they will pick on the boys they can be bullies My boys' good points they are lap babies not yappy (exception of my tiny) And the bad points.... but they can be a bit more needy they mark they are a bit slower to understand what I ask for they are always more timid weaker in personality And the bottom line is.... I've always wanted girls. My dogs have always been little girls till I became a hobby breeder. But my boys are just so sweet. I think we love what we grew up with. My very best friend was looking for a dog.... an Akita many years ago and she refused to look at girls. All she wanted was a boy and I didn't know why. She didn't really know why.... but then we realized..... her first dog as a child was a boy and my first dog as a child was a girl. What I am saying is...... nothing wrong in favoring a boy or a girl.... they are all great to have. I feel a certain loyalty and deep emotional bond I guess to girls. As did my best friend to boys! |

| This may sound ridiculous, but it's the truth...I wanted a girl, because I was a girl.

| ok, for one I had this preconceived notion on marking, or maybe not preconceived now that I have a boy. But after that, my oldest child is a girl, and my youngest is a boy. I love my son and would not trade him, but somehow I have always wanted another girl. Well besides the fact that we decided that two (one boy, one girl) was good for us, I look at life with a 12 going on 20 girl. Hmmm, do I want to do this again 10 years from now, NO! So, for all of the reasons that I keep thinking of that little girl that I will not be having, I wanted a girl yorkie. She became my little baby girl replacement. I can doll her up, hug on her, spoil her, love her and she will never get any bigger, go on a first date, ask for money, smart mouth, roll her eyes, or make me count to myself 10, no make that 20, maybe even 50. Anyway that is my twisted, weird reason. HAHAHA!

| Boys, Boys, Boys! I've had some awesome girl dogs but the boys are my favorite. The girls were smart, sweet and well-behaved but the boys have always become my little buddies. They are more playful, easy going and eager to please. My girls were always smarter so I guess I like mine dumb but loveable. Big plus..not one of my boys ever marked.

| All my life, I have only had girl dogs, in fact even my mother and her family only had female dogs, so it has been a family thing to own female dogs. Right now there are three females and one male. I not quite sure why other than the fact that males can have some bad habits such as marking and etc.. However, this year I bought a male yorkie, the first male dog in my entire family! I have always heard how great males can be so I decided to give it a try. My conclusion... they are both equally great. I have noticed that males however tend to be more loyal and attached. Mine is what you would say a mommas boy and loves to cuddle while my female yorkie is not really attached to anyone, she just likes everyone. She is a bit of a bully to the male though. On the other hand, I love to dress up my female and make her look so girlie. I do put cute bows in my male's hair, everyone hates it, they say he's a male he is not suppose to have bows. I think well hey the boys bows are blue for a boy and besides how else are you going to see that adorable face? So I guess I like both males and females, I will probably will always have more females than males, (although always atleast one male), just because that is the way I am use to it.

| CHOOSING A MALE OR FEMALE DOG One of the first decisions that a prospective dog owner (regardless of breed) has is determining if a male or female dog is the best match. There are certain characteristics that most male and female dogs will have, and knowing these characteristics will help you make the best choice. Even if you plan to spay or neuter your Yorkshire Terrier , it is still important to consider the characteristics of male and female dogs, as they will still be present even after the procedure, although the characteristics will not be as pronounced. Avoid the temptation to just pick the "cutest" puppy or older dog, and try to determine which gender will be the best possible match for you and your family. MALES One of the most obvious physical characteristics of the male dog is that it is generally larger than females of the same breed, and eats more. Males are heavier, taller and stronger than female dogs, although this may be particularly of concern more in the larger breed dogs. Usually the size difference will only be a few inches in height, but it may be more substantial in weight. Male dogs tend to eat significantly more food than non-pregnant females. Male Yorkies may be a little more aggressive and independent than female dogs. Again, this is a more important consideration in larger breeds than smaller breeds. Larger breed male dogs tend to be more difficult to manage in small, confined areas and often do not socialize well with other males. This will be particularly true if there are female dogs in the area that are in heat. A male dog often will form a closer bond with one person, whereas a female dog tends to bond equally with many people. Male dogs tend to develop quicker sexually than female dogs, and will display sexual tendencies at a younger age. This is a concern if there are other dogs in the house or in the neighbourhood that may come into heat. The male dogs will tend to roam, as they can smell female dogs in heat for many miles and if allowed, may even be gone for several days in a row in pursuit of females. Neutering your male Yorkshire Terrier may help eliminate this problem. If you choose a Yorkie male dog and plan to use him for breeding purposes it will be important to construct a solid fence to contain him, even though he may be small! If you purchase a pair of dogs for breeding purposes, it will be important to monitor how aggressive the male becomes when the female is in heat. You may find that the male becomes very possessive of the female - even towards humans. This may be a concern if you have small children in house, or do not have the dogs kennelled. In addition, the male may become aggressive towards the female if she is not receptive to his advances. Any breeding pair of dogs needs to be carefully monitored. Male dogs tend to be more difficult to train than female dogs (girls not a word about your men please!), and are more independent in nature. They also tend to be friskier and require more exercise. Males may be more difficult to socialize with other animals and other dogs, and need to begin socialization training at a young age. FEMALES Female dogs tend to be smaller than male dogs of the same breed and are often less aggressive. However, a female dog protecting a litter of puppies can sometimes be just as aggressive as a male. A female Yorkshire Terrier with her first litter should be carefully monitored for the first few weeks, to see how protective she becomes of the puppies. Females will come into heat at least twice a year for approximately three weeks. During this time there will be a noticeable discharge of fluid from the female, that is designed to attract the male dog. Spaying the female dog will prevent this from occurring. If the female is to be used for breeding purposes, there are products on the market designed to address this problem. Female Yorkshire Terriers tend to be less excitable and easier to train. They can, however, become easily cowed or shy if treated harshly, or scolded in a rough or angry tone of voice. Female dogs tend to bond with many people. They may be less protective in general than male dogs, however are also easier to socialize with other animals. Female dogs will fight with other females, but tend to get along generally well with male dogs. Usually a group of female dogs will establish a hierarchy, and will bond with each other after the initial pecking order is established. SIMILARITIES With both male and female dogs, it is important to consider the amount of time, attention and effort that will be spent in training the dogs and socializing with them afterwards. Both male and females require a similar amount of exercise, training, feeding, general care, and love. In addition, regular veterinary checkups and yearly vaccinations will be required for both genders. Deciding on a male or female Yorkshire Terrier is largely a personal decision. Unless the dog is being used for breeding purposes, consideration should be given to spaying or neutering the animal as soon as recommended by your veterinarian, to prevent unwanted pregnancies and puppies. If the dog is to be used for breeding purposes, it is the responsibility of the owner to keep the dog away from other dogs to prevent unwanted pregnancies. As I said om the beginning, I think it's really personal choice whether you have a male or a female doggy. Both are just gorgeous!! Al the best and remember to have at least one good laugh a day. It's therapeutic. Warmly, Sharda Baker www.MyYorkieSecrets.com |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Well, good thread. I prefer girls because besides the twice a year messes, they seem cleaner to me. With the two males I own or have owned, I've had to shave them down because they peed on their long skirts. But, that's just my preference.

| I prefer girls becuse of the non marking and the other sexual tendencies that boys have. I have had boys, but it's been many years. However I' getting my little boy next Friday as I am planning to get into breeding and did not want to have to search for a stud. I love the disclaimer that you started the thread with. But it's a shame that we feel the need to do this. |

| females I perfer the personalities of the males..and their sweetness...but I do not have any males now. Kate's half brother lives close and Bo is such a darling boy. Kate is very jealous like most of my girls have been...Emee is already trying to push Kate out of my lap at 4 months..I rerely found my males to be jealous. |

| I Love Boys! Okay, that's dual sided...but, I really do prefer males in this breed over females. Although they both have their strong points, I just like them boys! My Nemo is the BEST dog I've ever owned or trained. We compete (used to, he's really not mine, he belongs to my mother and father back in Illinois) in AKC Obedience and he's CONSISTENTLY getting scores in the high 190's. His best score was 198.5 and almost got him High in Trial. I only lived in Illinois long enough after we bought Nemo to get him to his CDX, but he easily would've gone all the way to an OTCH had he been my dog. He's got a great work ethic, LOADS of drive and is THE MOST CONFIDENT dog- period!- that I've ever met. He got each leg on the first try, how often do you see that, let alone in a Yorkie??? I dunno, there's just something to say about the breed and then there's something to say about Nemo. I would say that he is a rarity in the breed in any case. I've met a lot of male Yorkies out there that really don't hold a candle to Nemo in the way of temperment. In fact I've met MORE females that did than males. Interesting. In either case, I'm ESTATIC to be getting my new little girl from Budapest, Hungary soon. And I don't even like girls, typically! Not even in cats! Males, all the way around, from ferrets;dogs;cats;birds-heck, even most of my FISH we're males! LOL Oh, and my first dog was a Female Beagle/Chihuahua -X- named Bandit. Go figure. |
